Any debate on how ya’ll think we should be recognized?

I personally would like be known as USM. I know the majority of people will say it’s too confusing with SMU..since news media and analysts have called us SMU on several occasions throughout the years...but to me being known as USM sounds better than Southern Miss. I’ve always liked the way programs like LSU, USC, UCF..and yes even UAB are nationally known for their abbreviations.

Works purty good for Southern Cal!

Older folks still call us "Southern"....I manage a resort in NW Florida and almost everyone from OP/MSU/Bama/Auburn etc call us "Southern".

But, young and older folks from Georgia/FSU/Florida who haven't known our program a long time call us "Southern Miss".

I think only basically USM fans call us "USM".

(On a side note, whenever I find an opening, I ask folks if they have ever heard of "FAU", not a single man, womern or child has said "yes")

I've lived in WV then VA for the last 18 years. They only know of us as Southern Miss. This is the trend, to be known by a short version of full name. No one refers to Miss ST as MSU outside Mississippi. I do get lazy when I'm on this board and use USM often.

True - and if you do bring up "MSU" outside the state of Mississippi (and especially outside the southeast), most people think you're talking about Michigan State.

Scorching hot take: I kinda like being called Southern Mississippi.

Southern Miss has more of an identity I feel. The only people I know who call it USM are the ones who go there or know about the school.

Southern Miss. I’ve never called it USM. Southern Miss is all over the uniforms, stadium, apparel, signage around town and campus and social media. Calling it anything but Southern Miss seems counterproductive

Southern Miss is what I say verbally. Might type USM on the discussion boards. If you say USM while on vacation most people outside of the south won't know what school USM is, but most have heard of Southern Miss.

I thought this was a question of who would win.....we’ve always been our own worst enemy so I guess USM would tie the game after running back a last second 55 yard field goal by Southern Miss in an attempt to win by ten.
