Could this be the start of a rivalry
I know I was as hard as anybody when it comes to berating BW. I'm willing to eat my share of crow. Please pluck the feathers though, if you would. But with that said, this was the kind of win that rivalry's are made of. And with 10 more games in this series to go..... What does everyone think? I'm not saying we would be their main rival. But VT fans are sure going to want to beat us badly, next time we meet!!!!

I don't think so. While we all have friends, coworkers and family members who went to VaTech. They will not see us as being on the same level. There are no P5 and G5 rivalries I can think of. The in-state thing does make it fun and carries more interest.

No not right now, but after 10 games, who knows? That's a lot of games. Sure would be nice Rivalry= VCU in basketball and VT in football. Even if it's a minor one.Their fans will mark our return to their stadium....of that you can be sure. This loss to them stings.

There are not that many because in the past if a G5 team beat a P5 enough times they bumped up to the same conference or level like TCU did. Also you have to play a lot to let it bud into something and win. But a few that come to mind are Houston vs Texas schools, Colorado vs Colorado State, Utah vs BYU vs Utah State, TCU vs SMU, Nany vs Notre Dame.

RE: Could this be the start of a rivalry
It's not a rivalry, but next's years game will be huge. If they continue to struggle (post Beamer) and we can get better, watch out...
EDIT: I find myself now lurking on the Va Tech boards instead of JMU boards. I guess that's saying something...
Edit of Edit:
We are not Tech's Rival, that's UVa. We are just the instate team that just beat them. If they cancel our remaining games, we own them...

This feels the exact same as that Liberty fan asking us if we are rivals because they beat us. We gave him a resounding NO. I imagine that's how Tech fans feel today.

RE: Could this be the start of a rivalry
With respect to any rivalry with VT, at best it will be the same as ECU and NC State, as pointed out above.
Speaking of ECU:
Geographically and institutionally, ECU is potentially our best rival. That might have quickly come to fruition had we stayed in the same conference. The Pirates are otherwise way ahead of us in terms of tradition, visibility, and conference affiliation.
Liberty will certainly be a rival for awhile as it is the only other in-state at our G5 level. I say awhile, because with the resources available to it, Liberty's ceiling is almost unlimited.
JMU could and should be our best rival if they ever move up. Ultimately they must, as both JMU and NDSU have widened the gap between themselves and the rest of FCS, to the point of it being almost ridiculous.

Just peek at their boards. They seem to be content beating up Elon and circlejerking about hosting espn gameday that one time. They seem to be under the impression they won't move unless a power conference or the aac calls.

Meh. I doubt we see all 10 games played either but would be delighted. My boss doesn't think they'll all happen give the ACC network and changes to OOC games. But ya never know.

We'd have to split the next 10 games between us for it to be a rivalry.

RE: Could this be the start of a rivalry
It’s not a rivalry because we’re not on their level yet - just like Liberty is not on ours. But they are going to want blood every time we play them. A game against us will have meaning to VT Nation going forward. We broke their heart and they will not forget it. Their crowd is going to be amped for the game next year.

I don't think so. We need to focus Less on the VT game and hopefully our team is focused on ECU. Hopefully they can disect and exploit these weaknesses on the field just like they did Virginia Tech. I really hope this is the beginning of something really special for ODU football!

If we are lucky enough to beat them next time we play, I guarantee it would be a rivalry ( unless they cancelled the rest of the games)
