Galactus Wrote:I don't know, Drake......You might ask Cocky Road......he's the guy that started that discussion and is who I was responding to. Also, while you're at it, ask him who said baseball wasn't important and that it wasn't a "thinking" sport.......also point out where I or anyone criticized his interests or hobbies.
Nowhere in this thread did anyone criticize the game of BASEBALL. I said nothing about Major League Baseball, which is an entirely different subject. In fact, no one criticized COLLEGE baseball.....My point in stating that the nation isn't sitting "on the edge of its seat" as a whole had absolutely nothing to do with whether anybody said that or not. I don't care if they did. What difference does that make? (Though, if you ask me my honest opinion, I'll say that there's no question that I believe that many USC fans have an inflated idea of college baseball's importance nationally........simply because we happen to be good at it and we need to be good in something). However, that's not my point. My point is that to schools like Texas and Stanford, who have been hugely successful in all of the major and minor sports, another national title could never mean to them what it would mean to US. To them, college baseball is great.......but it's just another sport they win at. Quite honestly, I think USC fans are simply starved for success and championships, and their incredible support (which I think is great, BTW) for college baseball, is, IN MY OPINION, clear evidence of that.
But I didn't want to get off track. I'm talking about the sport's importance to USC and why I think we need it more than Stanfords of the world. Let me guess......you're get Tay after me on this one, aren't you? :crying: Or are Cocky Road and Tay one and the same??!!
Well, for starters I'm not sticking up for Cocky Road per se, & I have no idea who he is, nor do I care, but I doubt he's Tay. Feel free to ask him the questons you asked me to ask him if you haven't already. I simply asked my question to you because you used the above mentioned comment in an attempt to prove, or make a point, but the fact is no one's claiming that the nation as a whole sits on the edge of their seats following college baseball like they do college football or hoops, so your comment was not only irrelevant, but it proves nothing while serving no purpose.
As for your point, while I agree with you on the basic premise that USC's Athletic program needs a CWS title more than a program like Texas or some of the others you mentioned, I disagree with you totally that baseball is small potatoes to the Texas' & LSU's of the world. If they don't care much about the sport, then why are they consistantly so successful in it? Fans of these schools do care about their baseball teams as do the schools themselves. That's why they have the facilities they do as well as the fan support. Don't take my word for it though. Find yourself an active Texas or LSU board & ask them if their baseball team, or a baseball NC = small potatoes to them.
I also disagree with you 100% when you state that Gamecock fans have an inflated idea of the importance of college baseball. On the flip side, I think it is you that doesn't realize the sport is as popular as it is. How can you? You yourself have stated many times that you don't even follow the game, so how can you even begin to think you know what you're talking about?
Also, Sarge Frye isn't the only place that has solid attendance, & USC isn't the only program that has strong fan support. Our own in-state rival has solid fan support as do several fellow SEC members. MSU & the above mentioned LSU are just 2 examples.
I'll put it to you this way. Most people, if not all people, agree with your basic point that college baseball's not as big as football or hoops, & we all realize that it's not followed as closely by a lot of fans either, & we know that's why it doesn't get the same level of national exposure. However, where you lose me is when you make comments that seem to suggest that programs like LSU, Stanford, Texas, FSU, Miami, and many others don't really care much about baseball, & that USC's fan support is some kind of anomaly or exception to the rule. Our support for baseball may be above average, but it's certainly not unique.
