The Tournament
Admittedly, I'm a bit of a hoops junkie, so looking for ways to bridge the gap until next year. The Basketball Tournament, which I believe is in its 3rd year, is kind of a fun way to watch some of our alums play. Basically, it's a winner-take-all tourney with regions and seeds. Most of the teams are comprised of alums from colleges who are still playing (mostly overseas - I believe that players under NBA contract are not eligible).
There's a team of mostly UC alums registered, including Cash, Deonte Vaughn, John Williamson, Biggie, Hicks, Yancy, Bishop, Ellis, and DeBerry. Mel Levett and Bostic are coaches, although they look like they can still play. The regional games are played in Columbus, and begin next week. You gotta think our guys can compete well. A number of these are on ESPN, but has anyone caught the games in Columbus these past few years?
One great aspect is the fan involvement. You can sign up and get points, and possibly win money (if the team you support wins). It's easy to register -

RE: The Tournament
The other interesting thing is their use of the Elam Ending.
https://www.thetournament.com/rules
At the first stoppage at or under 4:00 of the 4th quarter, the game clock stops and timed play ends. At this juncture, a target score shall be set, equal to the leading team's score plus seven (7). After returning from the media timeout, play shall resume without a game clock but with the shot clock, until one team matches or exceeds the target score.
i. Example: Team A leads Team B 70-63 at the first stoppage under 4:00. The game clock is turned off while the shot clock remains on. The target score is set to 77. The first team that reaches 77 wins the game.

Interesting. That probably adds to a sense of urgency, and likely some pretty intense defense, to end the game. What's the genesis of the Elam Ending?

The goal is to get rid of late game fouling that slows everything down and breaks up the flow of the game. If you are down 7 you aren't limited by time you just need stops. Get stops and score. A guy from Dayton (Nick Elam) came up with it.

A game between UC and Temple would take three days to complete under the Elam rule...

RE: The Tournament
I’ve got a thread started on this for BearcatJam. Mel has a GoFundMe set up to cover some travel expenses to get some youth groups up there. He’s also selling BearcatJam shirts and has a few items (Bengals signed footballs, etc.) to raffle off. He’s gone far above and beyond to get this off the ground and I think the hopes are next year to have it in Cincinnati.
1st game is 7/21 @ 2:00, win and we could possibly see Greg Oden, Sullinger and the Scarlet & Gray.

Down 7 at half. It’s like watching Mick’s early teams with even worse offense and shot selection. Very ugly basketball.

I second that. Ugly ugly game. You can tell these guys came up under Mick. Missed layups, poor perimeter D, missed free throws and atrocious offense.

It’s like watching 2007 through 2009. Same guys, same really bad basketball.

Lost 80 to 63. Needed more guards. A really poor roster for this type of event.

Bingo. In spite of a poor overall effort, I thought DeBerry looked pretty good. Williamson and Bishop had their moments. Yancy looked horrible. Vaughn had the same swagger from his time in Clifton but his shot wasn't falling.

I liked Yancy as a bearcat more than some but he wasn’t good today. I am not sure Ellis would have helped if did not get hurt. Guys like Dixon, Parker, Shaq, Cobb, Kevin Johnson, and Justin Jackson would have fit better. This event is about high energy players and guards.

RE: The Tournament
Justin didn’t get his waiver in before the deadline. Shaq called last minute to see if he could play. Oct had foot surgery and Biggie couldn’t get out of his overseas contract. Most of the guys didn’t get in till the day before the tournament.
