I'm sure most of you know this by now...in case someone hasn't read the article. Tough loss. Great win over Nebraska and good luck the rest of the way. Can't wait to hook up with you guys!

Knee injury KOs Cumbie for year

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss senior CB Seth Cumbie will need reconstructive surgery on his knee and is out for the rest of the season.

"He totally blew that knee out," USM coach Jeff Bower said. "You hate it for him. Here's a guy who waited three years to get his chance, earned a starting job, then played well in the game."

Cumbie was injured on Nebraska's final drive, shredding the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Sophomore Caleb Hendrix, who played in place of John Eubanks (dehydrated) in the third quarter and Cumbie in the final minutes, will take Cumbie's place in the starting lineup. Freshman James Nelson will back him up.

Sophomore safety Jasper Faulk will take Cumbie's place as one of the two outside "gunners" on USM's punt coverage unit.

STEWART SUSPENDED: LB Naton Stewart, whose 49-yard interception return for a touchdown was a key in USM's upset of Nebraska, was suspended for one game by Bower for "an unspecified violation of team rules."

PLAYERS OF WEEK: OG George Batiste (offense), LB MIchael Boley (defense) and PK Darren McCaleb (special teams) were honored for their play against Nebraska.

Batiste graded 81 percent on 62 snaps, with six cut blocks and two pancakes. Boley graded 81 percent on 85 snaps, with 20 tackles and two forced fumbles. McCaleb matched his career-high with three first-half field goals.

NICE SHOT: Dustin Almond's 46-yard TD pass to Marvin Young turned out to be a variation on a theme.

"It was a heck of a find because we never have thrown to that guy in practice," USM offensive coordinator Rip Scherer said. "It's a progression, and he made the right reads, but we've never gone to the post. Never. Ever."

He's been a ball of fire for the last couple of years. We're gonna miss both his presence on the field and his attitude. Hope he gets the hardship ruling.
