It's beyond tragedy. Every attempt to turn around that community—in any fashion—fails miserably. The people can't be saved and don't want to be saved. The only thing left is triage.

The crooks who run that town then turn around and blame all the people that try to help, and the rest of Michigan shrugs their shoulders. They even called Uzelac a racist. The man could have been doing a lot of better things that trying to save young men whose own community leaders couldn't care less about.

Let me rephrase that, "easier" things, not "better." For a few shining moments it seemed as if Uzelac would have been the first positive change in that community in half a century. I almost believed.

Well, he's not wrong.

There actually was discussion earlier in year of closing schools because district is something like $21 million in debt.

The HS has had three principals in four years.

Anyway, that's Elliot. He didn't go quietly when he was fired by WMU either.

If done right...splitting the kids up between surrounding high schools may be the best thing for those kids.

It's been done before. Albion closed its HS several years ago, kids now go to Marshall.

Saginaw-Buena Vista shuttered entire district, kids now attend surrounding districts including Frankenmuth.

In 2009 Benton Harbor HS had enrollment of 1149, now it's 598. Maybe only a matter of time.

Now they are coming after him legally. You can’t be more cynical.

Stupid decision by the board. Truth is always a defense in any slander case, and now Uzelac will be able to publicly illustrate the gross incompetency of the board. They will also have to provide him with all the information (discovery) otherwise not accessable, to prove what he said is accurate. My guess is that the board voted to do this without having a good conversation with a lawyer. Once they do they may revisit the decision.

The district is over $20 million in debt and BOE votes to spend money to sue two former employees.

That alone sounds like "gross incompetency."
