For me, I'd love to see ETSU play a non-conference schedule that includes:
Winthrop
UNC-Asheville
Radford
Belmont
Lipscomb
Tennessee Tech
Jacksonville State
EKU
MTSU
WKU
Marshall
UNC-Charlotte
UAB
ODU
Kennesaw State
Ga. State (I think we are this year)
Appalachian State

These are all geographically close teams that need home games equally as bad as ETSU, would produce entertaining basketball and should be home and home games beneficial to all.
I would also like to see in the 3rd year of the Tennessee/Memphis series that's in Nashville, a weekend long exhibition style basketball deal including Memphis, UT, ETSU, UTC, Belmont, Lipscomb, MTSU, WKU, and either Murray State or UAB. Match the games up and play a Thursday/Saturday of basketball games at Bridgestone Arena, showcasing the outstanding programs of the region/state.

Your list would result in an RPI of about 175+ even if they won em all and no shot at better than a 14 seed. I do like the idea of a Nashville jamboree type event though.

Tenn Tech, MTSU, RADFORD, APP STATE WINTHROP, UNC ASHEVILLE refused to schedule the Bucs. I don't know about the others.

They know their chances of losing in JC is probably 90%. They don't like those odds.

What they know is that ETSU isn’t paying anybody in the Big South or OVC any significant money to play. And rightfully so. There is nothing to gain for ETSU. The scheduling the last 3 years has worked well for the Bucs. Maybe we should hold the complaints until there’s something to complain about.

ETSU shouldnt pay to play anyone, and of course we should schedule the money away games to improve our team and budget (and we dont usually schedule enough of those) but we also should schedule other mid majors at home rather than division 2 teams.

The goal has been to schedule less of those money games. Dr Sander said that a few years ago. He wanted more winnable games.

Arkansas State and UNCW are in the Asheville tournament. Would be a good chance to play teams at a venue where our fans could easily attend. Better than playing D-2 teams at home in my opinion.

Asheville and APP St. have NO excuse.Coaches scared and just looking out for their own jobs.Ridiculous in these days of tight budgets how close schools refuse to play. The AD's should force coaches to play more regional home and homes when possible.

Why would you want to play App St and their 250 RPI anyway? And what jobs are coaches supposed to look out for besides their own? ETSU last year played NKY twice, Sav St, Troy and Ga Southern. Not regional enough? And ETSU fans don’t travel to close conference games - Furman, Wofford, Western - so what makes anybody think they’d travel in Nov/Dec for these others being mentioned. If fans want to be recognized nationally then a more national schedule is required. But there are so many factors that go into this it’s ridiculously difficult unless of course you just want to beat a bunch of not so good local teams. And there’s nothing wrong with giving a couple D2 teams a few bucks and a couple of pizzas for a shot at a big game for them.

Good grief. If you had any knowledge of ETSU further back than 3 years ago you would know why we want to play app regularly. We have played them more than any other team except Chattanooga (75 times). We have put crowds of over 11k in the stands for games against them and last they are the closest D1 school.

Also, ETSU travels better than any other SoCon team.

I agree. We (4 or 5 of us usually) traveled to Furman, Wofford & Western this past season!

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
App State coach will not schedule the Bucs as long as he has the position.

You will find a lot of the big boys playing D2 schools.

ETSU, as all other D1 schools, pay OCC schools to play at their arena if it's not a home and away arrangement.

I know this- and this was one of the ways Bartow's schedule was revised. I simply disagree with this mindset especially when we need to pay our coach significantly more than has historically been the case. And with the improved team that we have now, I don't consider these games an automatic loss. Win some of the games, and that is how you get an impressive RPI and a decent seed. Lose the games, the RPI doesn't matter anyway and the experience still prepares you for the conference tournament.

2013-14 we had Morehead St., Winthrop, Stephen F Austin, Marshall, Austin Peay, and Valpo at home. That is a good home schedule. 2015-16 we played Green Bay, UNCW, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead St. at home. Again, I was excited about that schedule.

More recently, 2016-17 was total crap home schedule except for the UT game. Similarly last year we had terrible home schedule other than Northern Kentucky.

Agree, the last 2 years home schedule has been bad.

RE: 2018/2019 Schedule
I have enjoyed playing some new teams the last couple of years like Fordham and Detroit. It's just unfortunate they stunk these 2 years. Detroit is usually very competitive. South Dakota State was great the year before we played them and the year after we played them. When we played them last year, they stunk.

I would like to play App State simply because I live near Boone and work with lots of ASU grads and fans. We never had much of a rivalry with App, though. They beat us 9 out of 10 in football and we beat them 9 out of 10 in basketball normally. We are playing SunBelt teams, though (just not App). GA Southern and Troy last year. GA Southern and GA State next year.

I continue to be perplexed with App State. Looking at both their football and basketball schedules, how in the world could their fans get worked up at playing most of those Sun Belt schools? Most App State grads would never meet or know those schools’ alums, even recognize the schools, or know where they are — unless they relocate into one of those areas.

Agree. I don't know where this idea comes from that ETSU fans don't go to the away conference games. Go back and watch the road games at Wofford and Furman this year. The crowd ETSU brought to both games was great, especially the Wofford game where the ETSU fans were louder than the Wofford fans towards the end.
