At least we won't have the worst QB in the MAC (just second)

Wouldn't give credence to anything Athlon prints about G5. They plug in a body when
the starting jobs are still up in the air.

Actually Kent St has the worst, per their rankings, making us 10th in front of them and CMU.

But yeah, Athlon is usually unreliable. I wouldn't sweat that too much.

Obviously, Tony Poljan and Tyler Wiegers are going to be very good QBs in the conference. Way to rip a kid who hasn't had a chance to even take a snap yet, classy. For me, it is going to be nice to be able to root for an EMU QB who his teammates are actually going to rally behind and NOT want to kick his azz, er allegedly...03-lmfao Is there an emoji with a black eye??

I love this kind of discussion as issues of validity and reliability are dear to my heart (that's the geek in me).

NO one other than God and MAYBE CC have an idea how our 2018 QBing will be.

With Wiegers, Glass and Grissom who could be 'three of a kind' (poker talk) or a 'losing hand.'

As my mother used to tell me about jobs (and love), "It only takes one*." If one of them (or any of the returnees) are the real deal we'll be fine.

Summarizing tons of posts:

1). Wiegers is new and has only done Spring ball at EMU.

2). Glass and Grissom both have potential. Glass has JUCO experience, which is good, and 'good tape.' I assume Grissom was a P5 recruit with possible academic issues. Until August when both of these talented recruits are in the mix, it is virtually impossible to make definitive statements.

3). Plus a few more scholarship players with limited experience.

Or to say in a different way: My top 3 EMU QB prospects none have played ONE DOWN at EMU.

How can one make a valid prediction. The best predictor for a MAC QB is his previous game performance as a MAC QB. That's how we would have Woodside as pre-season #1 (2017) MAC QB. Based totally on past performance. We have NO PAST MAC PERFORMANCE DATA for these three.

If I were rating EMU 2018 QB: NR (not rated). "Unable to determine".

* Zsa Zsa Gabor is a noted exception. One or two or three or twelve or whatever number she ended up with. (Edit: She lived to the ripe old age of 99 and had ONLY NINE husbands. It seemed like a dozen.).

RE: Who Wins the 2018 QB Job?
One other thought (why this discussion is so crazy).

One would think that there is a 'pecking order' of QBs from Post Game #12. Right? Wrong?

One could say the Stiebling was #2 to Roback? Or did they decide to use him (because he already had a redshirt year) and save Hutchinson's RED SHIRT (why burn his red shirt in the 12th game of the season when the team was not in competition for a bowl game)?

Was Hutchinson the de facto second best QB on the team???

I am unable to answer this question: Who was the second best QB (who dressed for games) on the 2017 EMU team?

Some would say: "It has to be Stiebling because he played the back up role to Roback." I say it isn't that simple...

Has anyone seen Hutchinson's Hudl or highlights? I admit I really don't know much about the kid, but I haven't heard he's in the battle for QB. Anyone else heard otherwise?

Don't any of us sleep on Jairus Grissom starting as a pseudo RS freshman. I saw Josh Jackson play many games at Saline Highschool. Josh started at VTU as a freshman and threw for a lot of yards. Jackson is a better passer than Grissom but Grissom has better wheels. Physically they are not far apart. Can Grissom be a good decision maker?

I believe he has P5 talent. We'll see if he dvelops it.

Dear Frank,
Being at the spring game, I thought he threw some nice passes. I realize that just because someone threw some nice passes in an inter squad game doesn't automatically push you to the front of the class, however, I thought he didn't look any better or worse than anyone else who was inserted as a quarterback. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I definitely feel he could be in the mix.

I'm with Ken, I thought Hutchison showed the most arm strength of all the QB's in the spring game.

i forget: Did CC play 3 or 4 QBs during the spring game?

Wiegers, Stiebeling, Hutchinson and X?

RE: Who Wins the 2018 QB Job?
So this is what I have so far:

a). Wiegers - most experienced. Four years with a good B1G team as the #2 QB. Doesn't have the big arm. Won't make anyone forget Josh Allen or Roback. Passer not thrower.

b). Glass - strongest arm. Has JUCO experience. Very good mobility and a very good runner. JUCO tape shows all the throws. Saw a 50 yard strike for a TD. Tape showing a 50 yard strike "don't lie". Arm might be fairly comparable to Roback. Much better runner than Roback. Fascinating prospect. (Didn't play spring game)

c). Grissom - B1G talent but has no D-I experience. High ceiling. Very athletic. Good runner. Strong arm. (didn't play spring game).

d). Stiebeling - has limited MAC experience one game. Better runner than one might expect looking at body type.

e). Hutchinson - EMU redshirt. Appears to have good arm. Wild card. Only coaches probably know what he can do.

f). Jackson - very good athlete. True frosh. Someday could be all-MAC but at what position?

Post-Roback is supposed to be 'the worst of times.' 2018 could be most interesting. QB play could be mediocre, surprising, unpredictable, etc. 2018 could be like a movie where no one knows the ending. Why? Because spring ball didn't settle the position with two top candidates not participating in spring ball.

Maturity and intelligence will play into this as well. Leadership. Personality character. It's all part of the puzzle.

You're starting to sound like BobW pitching Wiegers. Lol.

From what we know from Iowa media, etc., and Bob's postings, is that Wiegers is a high character leader. We know less about the others.

If we could combine the best attributes of a few of our QB candidates we'd have an all-MAC QB.

The one thing we have neglected to mention is we have a 'rash' of injuries at QB like some MAC teams, NIU from years ago, WMU, BSU, etc. we do have plan A, plan B, and plan C. It could happen that the game one starter gets hurt and his replacement does better. A very possible scenario.

Yep....one thing I noticed during the post game interview with Steibling and Weigers is that Stielbling did a lot of the talking. Is Steibling a better leader or perhaps more confident than Weigers. Stay tuned and find out during fall camp less than 90 days away.
