the thread is about WHO WILL WIN THE STARTING JOB. it's not "i think i know more than Houston", it's not "i should be picking the QB myself", it's not even "who SHOULD win the starting job". READ. THE. THREAD. it's lighthearted. it's fun. you guys need to chill out.

next time there is a game prediction thread, i expect the same logic to applied with these posters. i should only read things like, "let's just let the two teams battle it out on the field. i trust Houston will have us prepared." that's thrilling commentary, just riveting stuff. god forbid you actually post a prediction on the game's outcome, that would mean you don't trust Houston! just relax, fellas.

Players read these boards. Expressing a preference for one JMU player over another when they are competing on the field for playing time isn’t something I find interesting, or fair to the players. I root for all JMU players equally. Also, publicly expressing preferences about what individual you think will win a starter’s role isn’t remotely in the same category as making a prediction about game outcomes. Football is a team sport.

I’m curious why you feel the need to criticize those JMU fans who prefer to reserve judgment about the QB starter until announced by the coaching staff?

For all the crap that we talk about here, this is one of the least offensive in regards to a QB battle (Thorpe/Dudzik comes to mind). If either of these guys has his feelings hurt over this, I don't want that guy as JMU's QB.
When have we ever NOT had a thread about this when there's a QB battle? So now that we have a coach that we all admire and respect to make the right decision, we aren't allowed to talk about this? Give me a break.
I seem to recall many of us thinking Schor wasn't going to get the job when Coach Houston got here. That turned out pretty well, I think.
We're fans, dammit. This is what we do. If there was anything offensive or out of bounds about this discussion I would understand, but this is complete fan speculation- something we do ALL the time. This is no different.
Settle down.

Talk is fine. A poll is unnecessary. Why is that so hard for you to understand that some people find it superfluous?

Wow, I wonder if that's just pure improvement on his part or if Mike isn't seeing the kind of improvement he wanted from Cole or Ben?

Nah, Maloney probably got pissed off and fired-up and thereby elevated his level of play b/c he was not included in the Starting QB Poll.....lol

So interesting to me as I thought Gage would be in the mix previously. We’ll see, I guess.

FWIW, at the Duke Club tour Coach Houston was very excited in talking about the potential of Gage moving forward. Said the biggest thing holding him back was experience.

I said as much at the time but I think Greg Madia posted a video interview of gage after the spring game and he seemed miffed. This was shortly after MH said it was done to two.
He probably was a little ticked and hopefully he improved in the past few months.

I remember that as well. I think he worked his tail off to show he deserved to be in the discussion. Says a lot for MH to say he's back in the mix. I don't think it's a decline in either Cole or Ben, either.

We all know what this means... we need to update the poll!

In Madia’s field notes today, he continues to give his highest praise to Cole.

And I continue to give my highest praise to Madia. I cannot believe, for the third straight year, we get to enjoy all of his information. Field Notes are the best. Go Dukes.

Can't say much about it as I don't get to see practice. I think we have 3 talented guys. My only real worry is the amount of reps with the first team. It seems kind of hard to get in synch in the passing game in the preseason if you're rotating 3 guys in.

RE: Starting QB battle
Interesting note from Madia’s Field Notes from today’s practice: “ Houston wasn’t happy how the Dukes finished their Friday practice, so he had the entire do two full field sets of up-downs – players started at one goal line, would sprint five yards, complete an up-down, go five more yards and do another up down, until they reached the opposite goal line. DiNucci was the first player to finish.“

Leadership is going to be valuable in this competition and the team can gravitate to somebody like this. Obviously not the only factor in the competition, but in a race this close it’s the little things.
