Our Current Roster And "Memphis Good"
To put things into perspective; IF the 2014 team had a healthy David Pellom or senior Mike Parks, it would have for sure won a couple more games during the season, would have been seeded higher and would have probably made the Sweet 16.
I don't like naming players that aren't Memphis good, but I do think that all but a couple on the current roster are for sure Memphis good. What most except a couple aren't, are high quality starters on a Sweet 16 caliber team.
Surround our current team as is with one 5* and a couple of top 75 players, or 4 top 75 players and it becomes an NCAA team that possibly can make it into the second weekend of the tournament. The challenge is getting those 3 or even 4 players.
Hopefully, Penny can pull it off.

Who fits that bill that we have a shot at for next year though? Hagans and Wiseman are long shots for 18-19 season...maybe 19-20 too

You hear a bunch of stuff about different players and about players reclassifying, so who knows? All I'm saying is that if you plug most of our current players onto any of our teams from 2000 - 2016, they would have been appreciated and valued by our fanbase more than they are now.

The best source will be grad transfers. Starting next week, we will hear more and more of these. Some will be solid starters for "smaller" programs, wanting to step up. Others could be guys wanting to get on board the Memphis train.
The problem is that Penny already will be looking at replacing (theoretically) 6 seniors next year. Any grad transfer he adds, will just make filling the roster that much tougher at the end of next year.
He could, however, use grad transfers to replace any jucos who may leave (Davenport, Rhodes maybe) with no "penalty" in recruiting for 2019.

The response to me was for this upcoming year, but what you say is true. Traditional transfers that have to sit out a year but get to practice would probably be a good thing.

Davenport from what I’ve been told likes Penny and will be back. He played well with Crabtree in a pick up game during Crabtree’s visit.

RE: Our Current Roster And "Memphis Good"
Most of the guys are Memphis good, they are just Memphis good “bench players”. They are in a role they shouldn’t have been this past year but that isn’t their fault. Hopefully Penny can add a couple of guys that can push the others to the bench and they can play the roles they should.

Davenport and Parks should both start next season. Brewton, Jamal Johnson and Jeremiah Martin should all get significant minutes. Thornton and Enoh are both nice players inside and hopefully coming back. Add Lomax, a wing type shooter and one more big man. Jayden Hardaway will be here as well. That's a pretty deep rotation and leaves us with room to sign 5 or 6 for 2019.

RE: Our Current Roster And "Memphis Good"
Just having a legitimate PG will mean 2-4 more wins on a similar schedule. Martin is a score first guard. Not a knock on him it’s just who he is. We needed his scoring but imagine getting that from the 2 position and getting the entire team involved in the offense.
On roster for 18-19 season there is little room to get a top 50 player elite type player. That’s what you get when you hire after the season when most of the elites have signed or at least committed. Improve the roster roster for 18-19 and the real payoff will come with recruits next year.
But I do love surprises. Let it play out when Penny can hit the recruiting road after the dead period.

I believe we need solid depth to implement the style of play envisioned by Penny. The current players have a role in Penny's system and indeed they will enjoy more success and accolades by staying at Memphis when their efforts are supplemented by quality recruits and transfers.
