So my prediction of a sink hole swallowing Gran McCasland whole didn't come to pass?

Pity.

Buying out McCasland's Arkansas State contract, could be the best $50,000 North Texas has ever spent. Too bad we probably won't be able to keep him long either. Another year or two with continued improvement, and a bigger program might snatch him from us.

I mean congrats and all but that result was about as notable as the winner of the New Orleans Bowl. Sorry if I offended.

True. But unlike “feel good football”, I can count on one hand the teams that finish their basketball season with a W.
Enjoy this one all off-season and hang that championship banner!

Was the "Ticket Mouse" one of the 283 in attendance?

The Hardline did a segment on UT-Arlington basketball this past week, so I guess they'll talk about this UNT win in May before drydock.

Well it does not get much notoriety, but considering where Mean Green basketball was under Benford, this is a better season then most believed possible. We finished the season by winning a post season tournament against a program with real college basketball history, and earned a 20th win. We have every player from the championship series returning next season. No, we didn't get to the sweet 16, but it was a nice three game series on national TV, especially Game 3, when over 6,300 fans showed you to cheer on their Mean Green. I enjoyed watching it.

I have no problem with him leaving for North Texas. I have every problem with him grabbing half our recruiting class and one of our top young players on his way out

As far as I'm concerned, our disaster of a season this year and the last 7 games of last year when we looked disinterested are all on Grant McCasland.

I also find it funny that he convinced our players to turn down a CBI bid last year, only to accept one with UNT this year.

Interesting. I didn't know that. Maybe North Texas wanted him to get started right away digging us out of Benford's mess.

$500,000

I said on GMG that you made a good hire. I wasn't happy that he gutted our roster as part of the deal but that's just part and parcel of modern coaching. Was told that his phone records late in the season suggested that the last few weeks he was rounding up people in Texas he and his family had business ties to in order to help UNT fund the buyout.

His wife didn't like Abilene and he bailed on them before coaching a game and she didn't like Jonesboro either and really turned off many in the community, so no shock he bailed.

Don't see him chasing a Cal, Iowa, Wake, Ole Miss type job. Figure the Texas P5's, OU, OKSt would be about it for him chasing unless there's price that would make his wife happy to leave the region.

Guy can coach. I think he's the rare dude who can get discipline and still have a close positive relationship to players. Most guys go too far one side or the other of that line. Also he's outstanding in donor/fan relations. Really like the guy despite the sour end of the season when we looked like a totally different team.

Well NOLA Bowl drew about 1.3 million more viewers than the three CBI finals games.

But Nevada won it in 2016 Sweet 16 this year, Loyola won it in 2015, Final Four this year. Pitt made round of 32 two years after winning CBI, Oregon made Sweet 16 two years after CBI title. VCU made Final Four year after winning CBI.

Of course there have been others that haven't done diddly since winning the CBI but overall, teams winning CBI have better than even odds of doing well soon after.

Seems like a coincidence rather than correlation. Who even plays in the CBI? UNT was a sub .500 C-USA team when they won it.

I'm happy for North Texas. Winning the tournament signifies a program on the rise. That said, the CBI and CIT tournaments should be avoided at all costs. They are put in place as a substitution for real postseason tournaments like the NCAA and NIT. Their existence is a place for G5 schools to go which opens up more slots in real tournaments fore more mediocre P5 schools. The more G5 schools accept bids to them and normalize them, the wider the gulf grows between the rich and the poor.

I don't see it as that, I think it's just good extra practice time and in some cases, a reward for a good season. That said, I wouldn't brag much about it or bring it up anywhere except maybe on the C-USA board.

It's not that we don't want to encourage anyone or downplay their accomplishment but no one really cares much about even the NIT and it's almost an empty accomplishment given that only a few teams were actually pretty good in the tournament.
