All time PER is interesting...

Dropping the ABA, and doing NBA only, Penny is #180 is PER. McGrady is 31... So screw me, LOL
But here are some interesting comps...
HOF players with PER +15 or < of Penny...
#170 Mitch Richmond (the other guy that I immediately thought of when this came up)
#186 Richie Guerin
#191 Dikembe Mutumbo
#192 Earl Monroe
#193 Connie Hawkins
#221 Lenny Wilkens (Coaching as well)
I left a few obvious old timers off.
In review I don't think Penny's HOF chances ever are no, but it might take a VERY long time and the coaching will have to help.
In reviewing though, the HOF is hard to get to, here are some damn fine players will less chance than Penny as per this site of getting the Hall call:
- Blake Griffin 27%
- Laimbeer 26%
- Lowry 24%
- Ginobili 20% (this is a joke, he's getting in as the first post Havlicek dedicated sixth man to get in)
- Kevin Johnson 19%
- Webber 15%
etc, etc.
It's an interesting discussion the more you dig.
1. Was Penny ever the best or at least top 5 player in the league?
- Yes, for a couple of those years on the Magic.
2. Did he have a lasting impact on basketball?
- Yes, as a logical evolution of the large guard, he was the next step of the Magic / Oscar class of PG
3. Was his prime long enough?
- Sadly, no, he was a supernova, and flamed out due to a bad knee :(
