Yes.
Play any and every big name we can.
Period.
We have to get the word out.
And once we do ...

I've never seen a poster quote "word on the street is..." so much. Seems like you say "word on the street is..." this or that, about every third or fourth post. Is it really just code speak for, "I wish"?

Our brand was fine without them when we were winning. Missing straight post seasons has hurt our brand, not - not scheduling Arkansas in basketball...

I apologize in advance if this has already been brought up. I didn’t read the whole thread. Arkansas is pretty irrelevant in basketball these days and have been for a while. They’re down in football now but I believe that playing them home and home would only allow them to come in here in recruitment Memphis. Just don’t see the benefit in this.
We arent great in basketball either right now. Perfect time for us to restart the rivalry. And the recruiting EXCUSE is just silly. It always has been a stupid thing and always will be a stupid thing. Feel free to explain to me how it helps their recruiting...
No need to call anyone stupid. The point about recruiting is not an excuse. Any series that we add needs to have some value for us. What is the value in playing a team that won’t really give us any national attention but we have the chance lose to them AND they are within 500 miles and are actively trying to recruit here. Why give them the opportunity when the potential benefit to us is minimal?
no one was called stupid. He said the POLICY of not wanting to play SEC teams because they might want to recruit Memphis is stupid.
It just covered up Calipari's yellow streak.
When Indiana got to where it could beat UK on a regular basis...he cancelled THAT series too.

There is also another way to look at this: We have much more to gain by beating them than they have to gain by beating us.
What do we have to gain by beating them what we would not get by beating some other non-regional team like Kansas State, Texas, Florida State, etc.?
If they beat us, especially in Memphis they gain a lot of exposure and potential buzz among our local recruits. AR puts out maybe one recruit a year that we would have any interest in, so beating them does not do much for us at all...
Attendance, mental toughness, bragging rights.
We prolly otter not make decisions based on our fears of losing .
It challenges our players to beat the neighbors, and we don’t want them fearing anyone, or fearing to lose either.
We could use some rivalry fans within shouting distance. The football team ain’t skeert.
lol Bottom line Penny wants to play them.
The FB team ain’t skeert because they have to do anything they can to get exposure. That will not be a problem with Penny’s teams. Play Kansas, Georgetown, Texas, KY, WVA, Oklahoma, etc. Penny can set these up. I can assure you this is Bowen’s idea as he thinks Memphis fans are too dumb to recognize and buy tickets to quality non regional opponents.
Prolly ought to look at youre spelling.
I remember Cal saying he over scheduled in his first year. He got too aggressive and it cost him a lot of L's. Penny needs to keep that in mind. The schedule needs an upgrade for sure, but we also don't need to have him playing every team in the Top 25.

I get it. I've said this same thing for years. I'd rather play top 25s rather than these wanna be SEC teams too. But...
The top 25s aren't knocking on our doors these days. None are wanting a home and home with us. So in order to get big games for fans, and start rebuilding, we need these games right now. If we can get home and home, do it.

Cal said that, but he schedule Temple (who we lost to), we had games to Kansas State and Miami (actually both, but I mean FL). But those games were already scheduled. We played UTK and Arkansas (who were both ranked) on the road and Mississippi at home. Cal didn't schedule those. Plus we played in a season tourney where we lost to ranked Stanford and Utah.
In other words, Cal's first season comment he over scheduled was spin. He was coaching Tic/Johnny Jones players and they weren't talented enough for some of the teams we played. But the schedule is the kind of schedule we would expect.
It was the excuse why we didn't work to schedule out-of-conference opponents in 2001-02. And we still lost to the few quality opponents we had. And lost to Houston, twice. If we beat Mississippi, Arkansas, and Houston those two times, this team goes to the NCAAs.

agree about Anderson
The Real Deal in the Rock starts this Friday and will feature the Bluff City Legends, with Wiseman, Jeffries and C. Lawson
Penny and Anderson will be among others going after West Memphis Class of 2020 PF Chris Moore - he's already 6-6, 210
