Well, yes - he was, to a degree. However, I think any of us could have been at that point. I mean, geez, all of that money and fame at such an early age. When Shaq was here those guys were gods here in central Florida.

I know many of them regret many of their actions during those days...

So you’re comparing a guy that hasn’t coached a lick out of high school (fact) to 1 weekend of games in the NCAA Tournament?

These Memphis fans are gonna be something.

Penny is gonna have way more talent at his disposal than those 3. It'll afford his some OJT.

They were Gods. I mean Orlando loved those early magic teams... I can still hear the crowd yelling "Penny!!!" every time he made a shot.

Penny overthrew at least one Magic coach...from what I remember. He also could get so sullen when things did not go the exact way he wanted... I hope for Memphis and The American's sake he matured over the years.

Oh and forget about asking dude for his autograph...

avert your eyes if you come into contact with him...he does not make eye contact or speak with "fans"...

All true. Back in 1993, I went to the Altamonte Mall and stayed in line 4 hours to get his autograph. I asked if he could sign one more card. A hard no. He had a sullen type personality and an ego that needed to be stroked. Has he matured ? I sure hope so for Memphis' sake.

As a life long Magic fan, I can't bring myself to ever say anything bad about Penny Hardaway. If only Shaq had stayed...

Agreed.. my biggest fear is he gets Memphis in trouble because he tries to do stuff that is allowed in AAU but not college

Probably a concern of a lot of Memphis fans, too. But I'm not going to pre-assume that Penny will have that problem. That's why you want a good compliance office. We certainly work at it these days. Pretty sure Penny has already been apprised of that concern, as well.

Oh yes. I still remember that posterized dunk he had on Patrick Ewing too. Man. Wow.

If Memphis doesn’t win multiple titles in the next couple years based on all this hype, I will be thoroughly disappointed.

This is quite the Hail Mary given that there are a lot of proven coaches at programs in the NCAA Tourney who would have probably jumped to be Memphis' next coach.

It's all about butts in the seats and top recruits. If winning was all that mattered, they would have kept Tubby and let him increase his wins by 1-2 a year.

Of course, this underscores the ineptness of Memphis' administration for hiring Tubby in the first place, but that's a different topic.

The move had to be made. It's going to bring a lot of money and a lot of talented recruits to the program. The guarantee of those two things is more than enough to take the risk IMO.
