Nice win. I was impressed with Langley's management of her team (including when to take out Ogwumike with her four fouls late in the game). Knight and Stanton weren't offensive standouts but both played really good defense on Texas State's guards.

Crowd was the only disappointing thing. I'd have to think we'll be on the road the rest of the way (I'm assuming the other teams can draw attendance figures with 4 digits instead of 3).

Our next game will be against the winner of St Mary's @ New Mexico. Currently 74-69 in favor of the hosts (Lobas?) with under 3:00 left to play.

RE: WNIT - Lady Owls v Tx St
Our first women's NIT win since 2006. If that's our 3rd win ever in the women's NIT, I've seen all 3 of them. We beat Jackson State at home in 2006 before losing at Indiana in the next round. We beat Baylor on the road in the NIT years ago (they weren't quite the Baylor they are now but I think they were NCAA champs a couple of years after that win?) before losing at Arkansas the next round.

I saw the Jackson State and Baylor wins. The Baylor win was set up by a 3-pointer I think at the end of regulation by a guard from the Dallas area whose shot bounced on the rim and in. We then handled the shell-shocked Baylor team in overtime.

We're also 1 win shy of tying our team record of 24 wins set in the 2004-05 season.

ETA - looked it up - that would have been in 1999 when we won at Baylor. Sonja Hogg was still the coach of Baylor - Kim Mulkey took over two years later and they won their first NCAA title in 2005.

Good job by Langley with Nicole and Laura having to play the post at times in the game. I liked us going small since the real danger was from their quick guards. Also like that we took open shots early in shot clock more than we had been doing in the second half of the season.

We play at New Mexico Tuesday at 7 pm (8 pm our time). I think it's back at the Pit (they didn't play their game tonight there due to a scheduling conflict. Is the Pit technically the Dreamstyle Arena? That's where the game is.

Great win! Excellent coaching by the coaching staff. What I love is we are always making progress every year.

Yep.

From the UNM Ticketing Services website:

Quote:Dreamstyle Arena has been the home to UNM Basketball for over 50 years. Nicknamed “The Pit’ it was built in a 37-foot hole in Albuquerque’s southeast mesa with a second level consisting of the U.S. Bank club/suites level. The arena’s capacity is 15,411.

That was our 4th ever WNIT win - I'll have to figure out what the 4th one was (in addition to Jackson State, Baylor and last night).

Erica Ogwumike went over 1000 career collegiate points last night (1 year at Pepperdine, 1 at Rice). Not bad for someone with two collegiate years left in her career. She should end up #2 on the all-time single-season scoring list at Rice, but it's going to take a prolonged NIT run to hit #1 in a season for total points (Jessica Kuster).

Arkansas State in 2004?

Looking though the fact book, I found four WNIT wins before Thursday's:

March 12, 1999: 65-58 over Miami (Fla.)
March 14, 1999: 62-60 over Baylor
March 18, 2004: 59-52 over Arkansas State
March 15, 2006: 64-48 over Jackson State

TCU easily beats Missouri State today at home so they face the winner of the Rice-UNM game. They drew 1000 (after drawing 1300 for its tournament-opening win over Lamar) so I would imagine they would host Rice if we could pull off the upset at New Mexico.

As a DFW area guy I suppose I wouldn’t mind TCU hosting us next round. Either way Go Owls & keep on winnin’!
