RE: FIU pedestrian bridge collapses
Was it a bridge that was already built? Or in the process of being built?

From what it looks like, it was installed over the weekend but not in service.

The bridge was installed as one large segment over the weekend. This is just all around awful. Hearing reports of several deaths. Multiple cars were trapped underneath. This just sucks. At least campus is on spring break this week.

So was it FIU's bridge or just on their campus?

Oh my god. This is terrifying. I hope everybody can make it out okay, although the pictures don't make that look promising.

I was following the twitter feed, and I saw a rendering of the completed project. It's supposed to be a cable-stayed bridge. My question is: Why was a segment from a cable-stayed left free-standing? Presumably the plan was to leave it there until they could make the cable tower.

Here is a photo gallery from the herals of the bridge being built over the weekend. Thoughts are with all the FIU faithful. This is awful.

As I spent my week whining about NCAA Snub, and now due to it; Kermit's departure, stuff like this slaps me right back into perspective. It's all just a game. Many people won't see their loved one tonight. #prayforfiu

As a civil engineer, this whole situation 1.) hit me hard 2.) should have never happened 3.) raises a lot of questions in my mind

Saying they were conducting a stress test on the bridge when it collapsed. I don't know if that's a normal thing to do with people and cars underneath it...but it doesn't sound like a good idea.

RE: FIU pedestrian bridge collapses
Ugh, that's terrible! When they were installing a new flyover by the exit where I go to get my kids from daycare they installed in a similar fashion. While it was up temporarily I stopped my car before getting under it at the red light, leaving a lot of distance between me and the other cars that did stop under it, until it was completed. I just didn't trust a large pre-fab slab like that up without the rest of the structure, even temporarily.

My condolences to those impacted.
