Is it the transient nature of these cities/areas? Probably also a cultural nature. When I think of a college sports tailgate, I think SEC/Big10/Big12. I think these type of fans have a much deeper passion for their teams, where the coastal people just don't give a.sh*t, and if they are gonna watch sports would rather watch the Lakers or Yankees.

College sports in general are not as popular in the large metro areas. There is just so much else going on to compete with people's attention and disposable income. With LA and Miami, you have to throw in the nice weather to boot-- not very conducive to sitting on your butt watching a football or basketball game at the house.

Most those markets are big business for pro sports. The idea that there is too much to compete with sports in those markets are silly. The large cities care about pro sports and college athletics is not a big deal to them.

West coast sports are a different story as UCLA, USC, and CAL have all been culturally relevant, but I feel too many transplants to the west coast have killed the PAC.

It's interesting as Arizona was in that championship game, and at this point they have been the most relevant national pac 12 team. Given it's a dumpster fire right now, but that might even arguably draw added viewers. Same with the big east and Nova. When the bell cow's make it to the final and the ratings still are way behind, not good. Nova is so far away a brand from a national standpoint that it's like them and everyone else in that league.

I have family in San Diego and Phoenix and it's just a different world. There just isn't any real interest in college sports. As others have said the only big college sports fans you see out there are transplants who support teams back east. The fan bases out there are just odd when it comes to college sports. True die hard fans don't really seem to exist at any of the schools.
