RE: 2018 Spring Practice
I love that Coach Houston received the runner-up trophy and put it front and center in the locker room for them to have to look at all off-season.

Hope it was an amicable parting. His Dad was a very good RB for JMU back in the late 80s.

It was a scholarship issue. He walked on, but had another scholarship that came from the same pool of money, so to the NCAA (or compliance or whoever) if he touched the field then we had "too many scholarship players."

That used to be common practice, the thing required was that the student athlete participate in that other sport as well. Had a friend play under Challace with a track scholly.

The scholarship he is on is academic/need based. Dumb rule

The rule eliminates coaches/schools from offering recruits random non-athletic scholarships to entice them to come to their program. Good in theory because it would definitely be exploited by bigger programs but can definitely hurt those students that need the assistance to attend school but also want/able to play varsity sports. Those folks get stuck in no man's land.

My guess is this is a new rule as it definitely happened prior to 2010. I told another school I planned to walk-on to JMU. They said they could get their higher priced school (private) down below the cost of JMU. It was not via an athletic scholarship. I'm not sure what sort of shenanigans they were planning to pull if the rule had been around but I can guarantee I wasn't good enough for them to risk compliance with NCAA.

RE: 2018 Spring Practice
Could they be hinting that DiNucci is looking like the starting QB leader so far?

“Ben is more like Bryan than Cole and Gage are for sure,” Kirkpatrick said. “He is more of that type of player. He’s a good athlete.

“In fact, he’s probably quicker and faster than Bryan, but Bryan was just a gamer and a winner, and we’ll see if Ben’s that way. We hope he is and we think he can be, but he is more like Bryan.”

Houston said he noticed the skill-set similarity between the Pittsburgh transfer, DiNucci, and the ex-JMU quarterback, Schor, too.

“You see him when the play breaks down that he’s got the feet to make some plays with his legs,” Houston said. “You saw right there with the naked boot that he made a nice little throw to [tight end] Mack [Cullen] on the run for a first down. That’s a tough play, so certainly I think he has some of the same intangibles that Bryan had.”

To your question...I don't think so. I think the first sentence in the article says it all.

Of course they're splitting snaps. It wouldn't be a fair competition this early if they already had a clear favorite.

Yep. Too early to separate. Need a few scrimmages. Your last sentence answers your own question. Good that BD is reminding the staff of Schor - that's a nice compliment.

The answer to the question is 'yes.' The first sentence is the author's. The quotes are the coaches. One of those is more important than others.

Houston's quotes "and I think certainly there is one or two making more positive plays than others" and "But I like the way the three are competing and leading our offense." directly contradicts the sentence you point out, "With four James Madison quarterbacks splitting snaps this spring, it’s been difficult for one to separate and get ahead of the competition."

They are hinting that DiNucci is looking like the starter so far. A lot of caveats in that sentence but seems true right now.

Fair enough. Not going to argue over who is hinting to look like the starter so far...especially after only a few workouts. Maybe the author will write something about one of the other two legit candidates to be starter with quotes from the head coaches tomorrow or Friday and we can then hypothesize that based on the coaches' quotes it is an apparent hinting that the QB Du Jour is looking like the starter so far. 04-cheers

There have been as many references to a 3 way race as a 4 way race. I think they use 4 as a show of respect to Etheridge. He really has no shot to start, but has been a very valuable member of the team for 3 years.

The subject of the article was misleading, especially based on the comments.
They said that two guys RIGHT NOW are making more plays than the others. That doesn't mean much, but it certainly seems like the two guys are separating themselves from the others.
They were definitely saying more things about Ben than the others. Houston even made a point to say how Ben was extending plays in the way Bryan would. Here's the quote:

“You see him when the play breaks down that he’s got the feet to make some plays with his legs,” Houston said. “You saw right there with the naked boot that he made a nice little throw to [tight end] Mack [Cullen] on the run for a first down. That’s a tough play, so certainly I think he has some of the same intangibles that Bryan had.”

I would say if the season started tomorrow, Ben would be the guy. There's a lot more practice, so anything can happen. I don't care who it is as long as they can play well and minimize mistakes.

Yep. And, unless 1 guy stands out so far above the others that it is obvious, there is not a whole lot of motivation for HCMH to name a QB starter. Could he? Of course. Will he? We'll see. I expect him to set someone at the top of the depth chart - or perhaps have a 1a/1b kind of scenario - but make commentary that the job will be decided in August. That is, "motivation" to keep working hard over the summer to prove yourself leading up to the opener in Raleigh. When he and I have our daily call this afternoon, I'll see what he says and report back. 03-thumbsup
