Let's stop the politics type fighting and come together....the past is the past. Penny is our new coach and needs everyones support and patience. It's still not going to happen overnight, but recruiting will pick up and there are good times ahead. Some fans need to let their pride go and come together...like Johnny Lennon. Or McCartney.

However, I expect much more unity around penny than we EVER had with tubby.

So, lets say you hire Penny. I understand this is a sexy hire, he is a local legend and at the minimum it energizes the fanbase and also probably nets you guys some great local kids.

Question: Is anybody concerned at all about the fact the guy has never run a college program? Especially on the high major side? Just wonder if anybody has any thoughts on this and if it is a concern.

Your question has been discussed and debated on here many times. But yes, that is somewhat of a concern for some fans, however he’s most likely going to hire a former head coach as one of his assistants to help him out.

^ I think that is an error in judgment on Penny's part since he has zero college experience as a coach. He would truly benefit from being at least the first assistant to Tubby at Memphis before taking the reigns. Even if it was only a year.

I mean, most coaches take over a low major or mid-major as their first gig for a reason. But hey, what do I know.

Yep, that was discussed from day one. It was even brought up at his introduction press conference. But clearly he didn’t try to make it happen. Yes it would have been a win win. But his azz is/was stubborn. I would have been making friends with PENNY from day one and constantly be selling him on the idea, because it would have benefited Tubby GREATLY.

This would all make TOO much sense. Too many egos, to make it work. This whole thing is a disaster in the making.

Using business vernacular, I would chalk this up to 'judgment' flaw for Penny if he was getting an evaluation.

Let's be serious...nobody at the high major level is going to hand the reins over to the man out of high school, so he isn't going anywhere. He could get a low major/midmajor gig, which is what he should be trying to do to cut his teeth.

When a circumstance like this arises, the only other acceptable option is to be an assistant at a high major under a retiring/older coach who is grooming the assistant to take over, ala, Larry Brown with Jank.

But to just be handed the reigns to a program of Memphis stature out of high school?

Don't get me wrong, I think Penny could be really really good for Memphis and I know you guys are probably looking at the recruits he can bring in and licking your lips, don't blame you, but I have to wonder what kind of judgment Penny is using to think he can just take over a high major program with no college coaching experience at all.

Just an outsiders view...take it for what its worth. Which is basically nothing lol.
