Penny isn't the same as the usual "Hey what about Drexler, Mullen, etc."
Penny instantly increases excitement, attendance, and recruiting. Those 3 factors you probably won't find in ANY other candidate you can name. You can't take away the connection to the school and city because that's what you need to succeed at Memphis unlike most schools in the country.
Coaching middle school and high school ball actually helps. He's been around the kids in the city for the past maybe 6 years or so and maybe longer.
Parents of recruits all across the country were probably Penny fans growing up or at the very least know who he is. His impact isn't just in the city.
The whole college experience thing is way overrated. Tubby probably has the most college experience of all current coaches but can't figure out how to make it work here.

So TOGC, which coach has connections to the University of Memphis, the Memphis Grizzlies, the city of Memphis, & the Tennessee/Mississippi/Arkansas area? What's his name, and where does he currently coach? You've provided the criteria, so who fits the bill? Let's see, how about the Legendary, Hall of Fame coach Tubby Smith? He has connections to the aforementioned, yet never uses them. Hey, I know someone who has robust connections, not to mention actual history, with these key entities you've identified. Penny for my thoughts?
