Ehsan needs time. You can't make judgments after two years. He's actually done better than Haase after two years

I was always a firm believer in Haase, having followed his career since his days at KU.

Ehsan? Not so sure.

RE: WKU Game Thread: Survive and Advance Edition
By my memory, UAB has hired four assistant coaches to their first BBHC job. Murry Bartow, Mike Anderson, Jerrod Haase and and now Rob Ehsan. UAB has hired two BBHC with BBHC experience -- Gene Bartow and Mike Davis. Is there a clear superiority to either formula?

Hiring assistant as BBHC is like recruiting a good high school player. Is either as good as they can get or is there an upside for further growth as they mature in the program? I'll have to bow to those posters with basketball knowledge and experience to evaluate the results.

Ehsan was a strong reason why Haase won.

Seems like outside of recruiting, the assistants don't bring anything to the table.

Ehsan's 3rd year needs to be better & improvement needs to be shown.

What he decides to do to meet this is up to him.

WBB Coach Norton is in year five.

Just sayin'.

Add in that this is Ehsan's first head coaching job. It takes some time to find out what works and what does not, to learn the craft, the X's and O's, to find out where your concepts work and where they fail and need to be adjusted.

Some of y'all are worse than Walmart bammers.

I’m willing to bet Ehsan is not happy with how this season went and expects to do better in the future. I saw some things throughout tee year that indicated he is advancing as a coach. I think he can do much better next season if he makes a couple of strategic moves this offseason.

This logic is flawed. You can absolutely make judgements after two years. How valid those judgements are depend on what your criteria is.
Ehsan can be judged based on expectations.

Quote:"We strongly believe Rob has the experience, background and pedigree to build on the already strong foundation he helped establish and take Blazer Basketball to new levels of success," - Mark Ingram

The expectation is that he use this roster to continue our momentum. He failed. Not only are we now in almost complete rebuild mode next season...we have nothing to show for it after the last 2 seasons.

The comparison to Jerrod Haase after 2 years is also flawed (especially the determination that Ehsan has done better than Haase did at this point). Ehsan started with a significantly better hand than Haase.
And with that roster and a couple of guys he brought in (namely Frazier and CJ Washington) in his 2nd season...he took one Top 25 team to double OT and beat another Top 25 team in a 5-game stretch over 10 days.

Now, Frazier decided to throw away his career and the rest is history...but the data 100% shows that Haase did more with less in his first 2 years than Ehsan has.

Right now, UAB's RPI is 151. In Haase's 2nd season, UAB ended the season with a 153...with 2 less wins. You don't think Ehsan has had the better overall roster for his 2nd year?

RE: WKU Game Thread: Survive and Advance Edition
I did not have as high of expectations coming into this season as a lot of fans did. I thought if things went right, it could be a great year, but there were a lot of questions leading into the season.
1. How was Nick going to recover? He played the pt guard role well, but he was not the shooter he was before the injury.
2. I also question the talent level that everyone seems to think is fantastic. Beyond Cokley and Lee (who has always had a problem with inconsistency) there are a bunch of role players on the team. I questioned how deep we were, and that became a bigger problem as the season went on. Bryant was a nice surprise and I hope Ehsan can have that kind of success in the future. Darling should not be a starter. But no one is better off the bench.
3. Coaching experience. Fans are going have to be patient when it comes to Ehsan. You can't judge him after two years. He improved this year over last year, and he has actually a better record than Haase in his first two years.

Haase had twelve or thirteen years as an assistant under two elite coaches. I suspect that made a difference as well.

RE: WKU Game Thread: Survive and Advance Edition
I keep hearing about how talented this team is - with no specifications. So let's break it down among the major contributors.

1. Cokley - No questions. One of the best ever. Talented.
2. Lee - A really good, almost great player. He has had injuries his entire career. Whether it is the injuries or his head, he has been extremely inconsistent. You just couldn't count on him to produce night in and night out.
3. Bryant - A rare instant contributor, and will be a great player, but lacks control sometimes. Ehsan's biggest challenge for Bryant is going to be getting him to not try to do it all by himself.
4. Norton - Plays the point guard role well, but his shooting and scoring are way off what they were pre-injury. He needs to be a more vocal (in your face) floor leader. No one on this team was that. Struggles with defense.
5. Darling - Should not be a starter. Great shooter, but streaky and not good at all on defense.

Bench:
6. Sullivan - Inconsistent. Great one game and disappears the next. Plays with a lot of energy but out of control sometimes.
7. Perry - Same as with Sullivan. Extremely inconsistent. I don't think he and Sullivan had a game where they both played well. Usually one is on and the other is off.

I stand by the statement I made last year at the end of the season that Ehsan's greatest seasons will be after this group of players are gone. I hate it for Cokley and Lee, but I still think it is true. If Ehsan's recruiting class comes in ready to play like Bryant did, then next year could be a good year.

And was North Carolina's JV Head coach. That had to help.

Who was the other elite coach besides Roy Williams?

I hope Ehsan proves me wrong and has a phenomenal third season that can match or even exceed what Haase did, but one thing is for certain:

He's isn't going to have the benefit of a home-city C-USA tournament and a re-energized Blazer family from having their football program cut to help him do it.

I don't know how re energized the fan base was for basketball. Attendance that year was as bad as this year.

Here are the 5 things UAB can do to reignite the fanbase/increase attendance:
1. Win the big games/make the NCAA tournament
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
2. Sell beer/improve concessions
3. Lower cost of tickets
4. Increase visibility of and access to the arena (parking, signage, arena renovation)
.
.
.
.
5. (if #1 doesn't happen in another couple years) Make an interesting hire

Not saying any of this would work (except for #1), but anyone have other ideas?

They tried #1 a couple of years ago. Attendance didn't really jump. Only way they will get Birminghamians to show an interest is to join the SEC and change the name of the sport to indoor football.

There needs to be a giant dragons head on top of Bartow Arena, (Think Godzilla sticking his head out of an egg). This dragon's head needs to have the Godzilla screech and breath fire on game days, starting about 3:00 p.m. then on the hour until game time.

And it needs to be loud enough that people casually walking around Birmingham or close to napping at their desk quickly snap to attention and say WTF was that ???

Good analysis and I hope Rob can somehow find a 3 more impact players ( 2 inside bigs and another ball handling/shooting guard )

You had me until the screeching, firebreathing dragon heads. Should I assume some of this should be in blue font?

We definitely need the UAB dragon logo on Bartow Arena. I was in Children's Hospital recently and had an excellent view of Bartow Arena... but not a soul would know what the building is without someone telling them. We have a great logo. Football has done an amazing job with branding. The rest of the university seems to struggle with the concept.

RE: WKU Game Thread: Survive and Advance Edition
Making the big tournament one year won't increase attendance the following year. That's what Blazer fans just don't get. They think having one good game or weekend means hoisting a banner. We've been irrelevant for too long. We have a ton of work to do to build a fan base. And yes we basically have to build one all over. The same 2500 that comes to Bartow hasn't changed in years. Attendance will only improve when we have a tournament program which means 4 out of 5 years with advancement in two of those. Going dancing every 6 or 7 years will never generate interest. It's called being consistently good over a long period. It means having multiple good recruiting classes in a row. I remember how many on here said we were "back" after we beat Iowa State. No! That was simply a first step. Of course the same fan base says we are a football school now after one solid season following a shutdown. With the exception of Dee and Answer, maybe Blazer 9911 and a couple of others, this site is void of rational thought.
