Buffalo signs Nate Oats to 5 year contract extension
Now up on UB’s athletic site: http://www.ubbulls.com/sports/mbkb/2017-...0308r5s3f6

Huge news for UB and the MAC. There was some talk that Pittsburgh may be interested in poaching Oats. With two 4 star recruits coming in and a host of juniors returning for a final season UB could be one of the best mid-majors in the country.

What is the buyout?

If you want to keep him, you’d better hope you don’t win your next 3 games, and you can’t hope that. It’s such a mixed feeling—you’d rather have the success that sets your coach up for a bigger job than not have it and keep the coach.

That doesn't happen every year in the MAC. Very impressive.

UB's buyout is usually salary * seasons... But I have not yet seen this contract.

So...
Worst Case: is just an extension of the current terms would be 1.75 Million
Best Case: They gave him what the offered Hurley before he left 2.75 Million

Either way we basically fund our next Coaches Salary via the buyout.

But more than this it prevents a lateral move and might even scare away some of the lower power conference schools because risking a 2.75 million buyout on a guy who has only coached one university is a big leap.

TBN is reporting it's 550-600K, the goal was to put Oats in the top 3 paid in the conference. https://www.ubbullrun.com/2018/3/8/17098...-extension

Very nice.

Rumor is the buyout is 50% of the Salary * Term...

So 1.3 Million buyout right now.

They did what they didn't do with Groce, increase him before the NCAA tournament.

Ohio tried to offer Groce 750k after the Sweet 16 but it was too late with the hot market offers.

RE: Buffalo signs Nate Oats to 5 year contract extension
If I am right here is the Top 3 in Salary.

1) Groce. I believe he's getting 650k base while he enjoys the remainder of his Illinois buyout with automatic renegotiation once its done.

2) Phillips. Is he 572k base with a retention bonus that takes him to 750k? Not bad for a first round exit coach.

3) Oates. At 600k before he's done anything in the NCAAs. Potential for more upside here if he can win in the NCAAs.

Most of the other coaches in the MAC are paid solidly 400k.

We've moved past the MVC in recent years where most of their coaches are in the 250-300k range. Loyola's coach is making 385k. Evansville is paying 180k. UNI has the highest paid coach in The Valley at 900k.

UB contracts tend to be very incentive heavy. His last Salary
1/12th Salary bonus for winning the MAC regular season
1/12th Salary Bonus for winning the MAC Tournament
1/12th For Finishing Ranked
...
...
...

So Assuming Oats can win the regular season title next year (and we return nearly everyone but Clark and Smart plus bring in two four stars) that would add up to 650K before the tournament starts.

Pretty sure Groce is only being paid around $325k on the first 2 years of his contract. Illinois is paying him $1.4 million per year for those 2 years.

RE: Buffalo signs Nate Oats to 5 year contract extension
If Buffalo pulls off a first round upset, which I think is likely, it will become very hard for Buffalo to keep Oats...he will move onto several “short lists” overnight. He would have to truly buy in to Buffalo and not care about $$$ or top 20 (or top 10) rankings. That’s a rarity these days for mid-major coaches but not impossible.

Base 600K and a lot of incentives.

The only down side is that the buyout is not structured like other UB buyouts. 1,000,000 this year, 500K next year.
