Hell if he wanted an old coach to advise and mentor ... Keep Tubby ... Just make Tubby administrative head coach and Penny ... Supreme Head Coach ! Or hire Jim Calhoun ... THAT WOULD BE HILARIOUS !!!
NOT the same by ANY stretch of the imagination....Over the last couple years(maybe 5 to be more accurate). LB has propelled SMU, Southern Methodist University to National prominence....Let that sink in.....During that phase, SMU and LB throttled JP's BEST squads. There were a couple of those years, SMU was ranked TOP10...
The year that SMU was ranked #1 in the country was phenomenal and they were going to WIN it all, until they had to play UCLA in the 16 @ UCLA....SMU was leading that game with about a minute to go. Larry needed to call a TO but for some reason didn't...I forgot if they were robbed in this instant or UCLA made some miraculous shot...But SMU was going to throttle Cal and the Wildcats for the NC that year....And they did ALL of this without Mudiay that bolted to the NBA..
Larry Brown is like JP in his enthusiasm and zeal for the game....Has extreme passion....Tubby is tired;lethargic;stubborn and lazy, as he allows Saul & Pooh to Cadillac through their responsibilities and coddling them....PATHETIC Age has NOTHING to do with it as LB wouldn't allow persons around him NOT performing and being held accountable...Basically, Tubby is criminal for stealing from this University and allowing his staff NOT to perform to the levels of expectations
nothing you said about SMU is even remotely close to the truth.
I'm NOT an SMU fan, however being a fan of the AAC and Memphis sucked then....I was hopeful than SMU would represent well....IMO SMU had talent to WIN IT ALL...They were also at some point ranked #1...game wasn't played on the West Coast as I assumed....Again, I'm NOT SMU fan but attended games there v Memphis and as impressed with the atmosphere....
I also followed Mudiay's development and attended some of his HS games with my son....I was intrigued by SMU as Pastner recruited Keith Frazier, however he became a component and contributor at SMU....My info may NOT be spot on,SHOOT ME

Doesn't mean we can't negotiate a lower buyout. Part of Tubby's responsibilities in his contract are for public relations and fundraising, for example, and the University could argue that Tubby has not met his obligations int those areas.
Don't shoot the messenger.
Also, remember how Tubby didn't sign the actual contract until July of 2017, 15 months after he took the job? Until then he was getting paid off a signed MoU (Memorandum of Understanding.)
Well, apparently the ability to pay off Tubby over twice the remaining years was not in the MoU, but added to the final contract.
Btw, here are the numbers that show the amount for PR and fundraising:
"Smith's five-year deal runs through April 30, 2021, and includes a base compensation of $200,000. He'll be paid $1.1 million for television and radio appearances during the first year of the contract; another $1.1 million for public relations, public service and public speaking responsibilities; and $400,000 for his efforts toward the U of M's capital campaign and fundraising."

Sure. At the precise time you produce your first intelligent post. We'll wait.
You were right, I'm an idiot.
Why don't you type out a bunch of capitalized letters, and then see how no one on the board gives a sh$t what they mean? Really high-brow stuff, Jamammy.

Tubby's assistant pool was only around $950K. But that number includes not just the 3 assistants, also includes the job Keelon had, strength coach, video coordinator.
Penny wants the higher number for his assistant pool, closer to or matching the Ole Miss number.
no matter their conference affiliation...no way Memphis shouldn't be paying more than Ole Miss for assistant coaches and such.
If those are true numbers...then the Tiger program has regressed behind Ole Miss in terms of national prominence for sure.
If on top of planting info, Penny is strong arming the university into paying big bucks, the university should tell him to take a hike.
"Strong arming"? Since when is a coach negotiating for more money for his AC's considered strong arming? More to the point, since when is it considered a bad thing?
RE: Pete Thamel: Larry Brown not likely to come to Memphis.
OP. That's what even "Big Jack" said about Calipari. I admit I said the same about Penny taking the job. My thoughts were why would a guy want to work that hard with Penny's money, but his love for the game would overcome that.

RE: Pete Thamel: Larry Brown not likely to come to Memphis.
Larry Brown was an ethics violation magnet anyway. If you cannot find clean coaches, you must implement safeguards so they don't bring down the program. Penny's background will be enough to attract unwanted scrutiny even if he is clean from this point forward. Put in procedures to minimize risk.
