I think Gary would excell more in a "Daniel Fountain" type roll. Come in, drain some threes, but play off the ball

Completely agree. Gary definitely stikes me as a shooting guard more than a point guard. I can somewhat see him become more of a combo guard, but he definitely has to work on his dribbling and court vision. He throws some sloppy passes and can easily turnover the ball while dribbling from what I've seen.

RE: 2018 Transfer List
Gary was brought in to be a PG. He benefited from our lack of depth and saw plenty of playing time this year, and did seem best fit in that "Daniel Fountain" role. However, so did Jay Estime. Jay was better this year (not by much) and his ceiling is higher IMO. With a guy like Jaylen Sims also coming in looking to play the Wing, it might be difficult for Gary to get minutes in that role. If he can't develop his PG skills, UNCW might not be the place for him.

I think Gary will be just fine. May never be a starter, but he will improve an contribute.

RE: 2018 Transfer List
Wasn't in town most of the year but checked out the board regularly. I know recruiting is ongoing but with our presently signed recruits and our returning players do you guys have any thoughts on where we will stand preseason in the CAA. Maybe this has been discussed and I missed it, sorry if that is the case.

We will be better next year, but so will most of the conference. The best I see us being picked in the Preseason is 4th. Northeastern, CofC, and W&M should all be picked ahead of us.

I wouldn't disagree with that. Towson and Drexel will also be good. Hofstra won't be a slouch. It's gonna be a dogfight next year.

Delaware and JMU are bringing back key guys as well. Elon is the only team that I can't really see being good and even they still bring back Seibring.

Elon underachieved this year, they have enough that could cause problems next year too

RE: 2018 Transfer List
Too many unknowns next year. I can't see us being picked any higher than 5th. and likely 6th. The loss of two starters, including a PG like Talley will be on the minds of any pre season picks. I'm also hesitant to crown a freshman PG as our savior, when we have no idea what he will look like vs. D1 talent. If I were McGrath, i'd be looking for a grad transfer PG and a JUCO/Transfer big man.

Tyalor and Fornes are going to have to make huge leaps in consistency next year, otherwise we're going to be in a lot of trouble. Taylor can get hot, but he can also completely disappear for long stretches of a game.

I honestly don't know what to expect on the floor. If Elmore and Cylla turn out to be effective, we could be really good. But, as with the freshmen, we just don't know.

RE: 2018 Transfer List
McGrath was on the David Glenn Show today; here are some of the highlights:

McGrath: My first season as a head coach was a huge learning process. It didn't go according to plan, but neither has any season I coached at Carolina as an assistant, even though we won championships.

McGrath: What I've learned the most in one year of being a head coach is that Roy Williams was right a lot. As an assistant, I chimed in with ideas, but it honestly makes me wonder how coaches didn't fire me for being so cocky and naive early in my career.

McGrath: Yesterday, I flew to Lubbock, Texas, and I sitting in a parking lot in Colorado about to watch a game. I'm definitely getting some recruiting done this month.

McGrath: Devontae Cacok has this incredible motor to rebound the basketball. I've never seen anything like it. Brice Johnson set rebounding records at UNC and is a tremendous player, but not even he reaches that level.

McGrath, on UNCW: In the end, we made progress. All our players got better by the end of the year. That's what you have to focus on.

McGrath, on Woody Durham: He was an icon. When you first get to Chapel Hill, you hear about Coach Smith and Woody. He was treated like royalty by all the fans when he traveled with us.

McGrath, on coaching in the CAA: I know CofC is our big "rival," and they had a great season, but there's nothing like a Duke-Carolina. When I got to Chapel Hill, I didn't have that hatred aspect in me either.

Must be significant for him to travel all the way out to Colorado.

With the full cost to basketball for out of state tuition, we need to look at some in-state recruits.

For the majority of recruits... absolutely.

I don't think we should FULLY restrict ourselves though. A small number of out of state talents wouldn't hurt.

This really isn’t any different than before. Hell Most of Brownells guys came from out of state. Personally I could give a rats arse where they are from if they can play!

Jaylen Sims is from Charlotte isn't he? Secondly, I hope that the staff get the best players from Australia to Alaska. NCAA wins will take care of any financial concerns.

He is from Charlotte, and very much the mold of a former player current bench warmer at another school that was from the same city
