And here I thought some local fans were complete irrational dumbasses.

you don't honestly think tubby should hold onto the gig do you?

What has he done to get fired in year #2 of a rebuild?

It's probably more than just W's and L's. It was a bad hire to begin with, and he most likely won't ever make them relevant to the degree they want to. His recruiting is very sub-par right now, attendency is way down, I think everyone sees the righting on the wall and don't want to see the ship sink any deeper. Penny is at a point where he's ready to make a move, and they don't want to see him go elsewhere with all the potential he has to offer.

Penny is at a point...what? He’s never coached a second at the college level. He has never seen a page of the compliance manual. His experience with college is his time under pimp daddy Larry Finch. He will be bringing in an AAU mentality and way of doing business at a time when the FBI and NCAA are on the warpath and if you are not a blue blood you better look for cover. And they are talking about Larry Brown. Bwahahahah! Just hire Book Richardson too and be done with it.

If they do this and it goes poorly, and it will, it will make that job toxic for a generation since it will announce that the fanbase and its boosters are a clown-show.

Forget the $3.25 million per year Smith is owed in full between now and the 2020-21’ season, add in his staff’s salaries under contract...scary that there are peoole whose grey matter functions in a manner that this looks like a good idea on any level.

Maybe not as HC, but as an assistant at a big school or NBA. I would hope that Memphis does some serious vetting before pulling this thing off, I'm just saying there are a lot of fans and boosters pissed about Tubby. Kind of reminds me of our Tubby, I was on the bandwagon to get rid of him after year 2, but everyone said that would be crazy to get rid of him so quickly. Why let a bad hire drag on any lon get than it needs to?

Penny would be #1 recruiter in country. What other black coach on his level? Look at Avery Johnson at Alabama. We don't want Penny getting job to be honest. His recruiting would put Mick's recruiting on hot seat...

SMU is still drilled with scholarship reductions and a conference mate wants to bring Larry Brown in on staff? Along with a guy from the AAU circuit with some shady ties to the underbelly of that beast? Idiots.

Yeah, these Memphis rumors seem....ill advised. No doubt Tubby is a terrible cultural fit for Memphis. But that's a pretty accomplished program to be considering a high school coach as its head coach.

Lol, penny, been legend in Memphis since 90's. Lol on some real **** his aau teams would destroy some teams in aac. He already has more pull than ANY coach in our league at high school level.

Let's say he scores a couple of highly touted recruits he's associated with. Could make for an interesting year next season for the Tigers. They rode the Calipari express to renewed relevancy. Why not try it again?

Granted, I'd never want something similar for us. But hey, if it works - great! If it blows up in Memphis's face - so what?

I'll take Princeton head coach right now on staff without hesitation. AAU coaches are more connected than college coaches.

lol NO HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER in tri-state area knows who parker or johnson is.former Lol Alex Meecham is top AAU connection in area from UC. Penny would instantly be top coach for majority of top recruits.

If I'm Tubby, I'm signing Penny to an assistant job yesterday. Run with it before it runs you over.

People on Memphis boards are saying Lil’ Penny has said he will not take an assistants position even for one year. Lol.

Once again, besides having idiot fans and boosters who tend towards wanting to do things the shady way what in this rebuild year has he done to get fired? He goes for win #20 today.

If I’m him I gladly take the $9 million payout and flip that crazy bus the bird on the way out of town.

Maybe. I don't know. He walked into a dumpster fire. Did better year 2 despite real roster issues and some key players leaving the program. Hard to have any idea at this point.

Yep. I wouldn’t have wanted to hire him at his age but you pay somebody $3 million a year on a 5 year deal to come in and do a complete rebuild after the last coach left the program on fire, the guy gets 20 wins in the second season which is more than anyone would have predicted and you’re going to run him out of town for a guy with no experience above high school?

I said in another thread it reads like a story in The Onion. It shows a lack of leadership at the school, a lack of control of their boosters, and that they need some manic depressive meds for their fan base who now want a shortcut.

As posted by cold blooded on the AAC board it feels a bit like a guy who is heading to the casino to win his rent money. Good luck.

That's not the point I was making.

Anyways, here's hoping UCLA names Bill Walton coach when they can Alford.

To get canned prematurely you really need to have off the court issues or be negligent of your job responsibilities. I wasn't in favor of firing Tuberville after year three because coaches deserve a chance to prove themselves over a recruiting cycle. Had I known at the time he hadn't met HS coaches less than 20 miles away I would've fired him immediately for cause.

If Tubby is neglecting to do the job he was hired to do then by all means let him go but it doesn't seem that way from afar.

Wow. That could be a game changer. She was a legend at the school, and certainly has the coaching background for it. I'd love to see her get a shot.

I think Tubby is an outstanding x&o coach, but he's reputed to be difficult to play for, and he can't get the talent through the door. His record since leaving UK (over 10 years ago) is not good, and there's no reason to think that he can get Memphis back to where that program traditionally is.

Will be interesting to see how she recruits. Maybe she's a great coach and can win with low end talent. I would imagine a lot of families with kids being recruited would be uncomfortable with that set up. Their kid slips up and says the "wrong" thing in a practice or in the heat of the moment with a female coach and he could be in a lot of hot water in this current environment. That's a road I would imagine a lot of parents wouldn't even want to consider.
