Pirates coach, once Eagles coordinator, faces daunting task at familiar Roberts Stadium

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss celebrates homecoming this weekend.

The weekend also will mark a homecoming of sorts for East Carolina football coach John Thompson.

Thompson, who spent seven seasons at USM as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator on Jeff Bower's staff, returns to Roberts Stadium for the first time since he left town following the 1998 season.

"I've been asked about that, yeah," Thompson deadpanned before becoming more serious.

"Thing is, I don't think I want to dwell on it. Sure, it's a little special for me, but I wouldn't be doing the very best job with this football team if I get caught up in any emotions.

"I'll come back and enjoy (Hattiesburg) another time."
