I agree. I'm already seeing that. It's going to come down to who can package the content that's desirable in small enough chunks to make ala-carte purchasing of channels viable for niche audiences. Even then, you'll be paying more for less but the less will be what the customer has dictated, not what the provided offered in a package deal.

Since I already pay for youtubetv, I will not likely will spring 5 bucks extra since I already will have an abundance with the other channels. I do hope it is successful for the SBC, you league has been underpaid far too long. I will just have to catch App when on the ESPN networks. 04-cheers

I called this 2 years ago with espn going to a pay base on their streaming. Not trying to take any credit on it because it should have been plain as day at some point espn was going to stop giving it away. But I believe it was cord cutters like Panama who did not see this coming.

But it does make you wonder if the espn+ will be part of your espn service with cable and direct tv or Dish? If not I can see more sports fans cutting away and going to pay base streaming.

Which leads to something else I said that Panama and a few others snickered at...

be careful of what you wish for (pay just for what you want) because in the end you will be paying the same or more just for the those things that really really want to watch. And you wont be getting those other 200 channels....some you watched few times a month.

While I wouldn't care to pay $5 a month for sports I cared about...I would pay to watch the SBC (I watch as much now as I did when Western was in the conference) but not if it was only the SBC....

$5 today, $8, two years from now, and up and up. Hardly anything stays constant

I am confused as to how they were giving it away as there was no legal way to get Watch ESPN and ESPN for free. It was always an extension of some provider based service you pay for.

It was always "free" to me. Maybe it is part of what I pay AT&T for wifi but that cost is low and I don't pay for cable or satellite. I get all ESPN3 "free" if the game is not also on an ESPN tv channel. I would have to pay for everything that is on WatchESPN. But it has been nice since the majority of SBC games are solely ESPN3

Likewise. With Charter 100/100 internet I get ESPN3 and watch espn FREE. This is why I said on that other thread that if you're going away from that and moving all of your content to pay to view you've basically killed exposure outside of dedicated fans.

I’m just wondering if you actually read the announcement. There will be more games, not less on the network channels, plus all championships in all sports and every SBC home game in basketball (men and women) and football. That’s much better than we have ever had. And all in one place that offers broadcast and streaming.

This means the end of having to commit to long term deals and having to pay for it when you are not using it.

CUSA gives you the choice of paying in chunks or subscribing.
It is $6.95 for 24 hours
$10.95 for a month
$99.95 for a year

You get ONLY CUSA content.

ESPN+ will be $5 a month.

CUSA is looking at a APP something like the OVC network for ROKU. The OVC has a really good app based broadcast that is as clear as most TV games on the FCS.

In my opinion this should be the base model CUSA and the SBC should go to....with a $5 to $8 monthly fee. Then try to sell your championship games to TV and a few other games

I mean, we're essentially doing that except our app is called ESPN+ and offers content other than Sun Belt sports like MLS and MLB games.

HUGE difference...espn gets that $5 fee each month

If each of the 12 SBC schools had 10k in fans (total 120k fans that signed up at $5 a month...$50 a year for the SBC app,

thats $6,000,000 going to the SBC and 15k each (180k) that's 9 million

Forbes reported in the spring of 2015 that MLB.tv had around 3.5 million subscribers.
Let's assume NHL had a million with no overlap.

Let's assume MLB.tv is at four million, that's five million subscribers who say please take my $60 but I would wager that at roughly half the cost of MLB.tv and less than half the cost of NHL Game Center that they could very easily generate volume to more than make that up.

Hulu has 17 million subscribers (real Hulu not the cable replacement) if they could hit the Hulu number they are way ahead. If they can hit the 104 million of Netflix they are printing their own money.

I would expect something closer to Hulu because Hulu's numbers are US only while Netflix is worldwide.

ESPN could easily gross $85 million a month on ESPN+ and even more if they are inserting ads at 17 million subscribers.

Assuming all of our estimated 4 million MLB.tv subscribers are buying the full package and not a team package that's $460 million a year add in the NHL subscribers and assuming none buy the cheaper team only that's $140 million a year to generate $600 million.

If ESPN+ can hit the Hulu level, thats 1 billion a year.

That's a heckuva package.

App St and Ga Southern rivalry actually got me starting watching SBC football. However, I would not pay 5.00 a month for ESPN+ since I typically have a SBC as one of the multiple games on the TVs in my man cave. I hope they somehow have regional games like they do for people who already have ESPN or YouTubeTV offers as part of it's lineup like SEC, B10 and the Future ACC network.

For me $5 is a bargain since I get MLS that I was paying $70 a year a for.

Me too. I just hope they keep replays of the games and the condensed versions. I will watch full Houston games but liked watching the condensed replays of other games to keep up with the league.

Gah a creamsicle fan.
