The game would have been poorer because of it. Which is why the NCAA tournament selection process must be fixed.

Simple fix for this is no more than 4 at large bids per conference, or put another way, max of 5 teams from a conference can get in. If you can't finish in the top five of your league, you haven't earned a chance to compete for a national championship.

Then, make your record in the last 10 games a part of the metric again. If you lose 8 of your last ten games, you shouldn't even be on the bubble.

Since the NCAA now owns both tournaments, they could construct two parallel and equal bracket groupings of all deserving teams (48, 64 or 68 each). The two top surviving teams could then have a 3, 5 or 7 game series at a major venue for the National Championship. Only the final series would call for more games than the present arrangement.

The CBI has a "best of 3" series running right now between North Texas State and San Francisco.

At a minimum .500 in conference games.
If you can’t finish .500 or better in your conference you don’t deserve to play for a national championship unless you win your conf autobid.
Makes Reg season more impt and conf tourney more impt.
Should improve attendance all the way around and improve tv ratings as games will be vastly more important.

Teams should be a minimum 2 games over .500, including your conference tournament. If you finish the conference season 9-7, you'd better win one, or hello NIT.

And no more ifa, coulda, shoulda, woulda from the committee. If a guy was hurt but now he's not, sorry Charlie. If your other guys muddled to through at 8-8, but now Bob Stone is healthy, well at least you have him for the conference tournament.

And once the NCAA field is selected, all teams are ranked solely on their record. You're 31-2, but you play in the Big Sky Conference ? You're still a 1 seed to me.
