UNT Done Scheduling Body-Bag Games?
From the North Texas Athletic Director.

We have not signed any “money” games since I’ve been here. We do still have some on future schedules. But we’ve held the line in only scheduling home and homes to get better opponents in apogee and hopefully have a better chance at victory.

I love his thought process. I thought it might lead to a lack of attractive road games, but so far he has managed to ink H/H's with Texas Tech and Cal.

Our AD stated that there have been conversations, but they could not work out the dates.

How is this small time?

Since taking over at North Texas Baker has signed some great home and home series. Because of this switch in scheduling, Cal, Texas Tech, Houston, Memphis, and Wyoming will all be coming to UNT beginning in 2019. Those are quality programs to be playing home and home series with.

What does Southern Miss have lined up?

You’re not going to find a P5 home game every year. So there will be years where your schedule is stacked with G5 and FCS opponents. I just think that’s kinda small time.

Easy to say that when schedule through 2025 has money games, by the time we hit 2025 your AD probably will be long gone...

Please WKU, beat some of those P5 teams.

UNT, how are you planning on balancing that budget with no 'buy' games?

RE: UNT Done Scheduling Body-Bag Games?
We tried this for a bit. Problems arise quickly.

1. You'll be able to schedule low-mid tier P5 schools in home and homes if you've earned respect in some form or fashion. We were able to get Virginia and Kansas for home and homes. How much interest those teams draw, though, is debatable.

2. After you win against them, they'll never schedule you again.

3. The incoming money doesn't match what you need to be in the black.

So for USM, we had a few years where we scheduled mid-tier P5 teams and won some games. Even got a Top 10 Louisville in the Rock the year they won the Sugar Bowl. But did people care? Eh, somewhat not really. The crowds were about what they always were. Those schools didn't bring a huge amount of fans by any means. So revenue stayed about the same. And for USM, it hurt us more than helped us because in the heart of SEC country, if you can't show you're able to hang with top SEC teams, you're not worth paying attention to. So no one cared that we beat Virginia or Kansas, they weren't Bama or LSU or Auburn.

Personally, I like the idea of only home and homes, but the reality isn't as easy to pull off. And when I see us getting paid 3.6 million to travel to Auburn for two games, I'm not going to mind taking that money. And if we win, that'll boost ticket sales far more than any win over a mid-tier P5 would.

No, but you should have a P5 home game nearly every other year, and be playing a P5 somewhere almost every year. Thats a lot better than always playing a P5 on the road. And all of our schedules are stacked with G5 teams, thats what we are, its the conference we are in. Theres nothing wrong with that. I don't see why you think playing H/H with a P5 every other year at home is more "small time" than playing a body bag game on the road every year.

You must have missed this thread...

http://csnbbs.com/thread-843266.html

North Texas has one of the larger athletic budgets in C-USA, to go along with the new $3.5 million added to the budget starting next fiscal year. And, this year our new AD recorded over $9 million in private donations to the athletic department. I'm not saying we are flush. No G5 is loaded compared to the P5s, but we are in a good financial position compared to many G5 programs.

I believe we have the funds to sustain this home and home strategy with out suffering financial troubles.

The Body-Bag games on our schedule are the result of our last AD. We will play those out, but have no plans to continue scheduling them in the future.

I have highlighted the recent home and home series in bold. But, none of these schedules reflect what our schedules will look like once the "Money" games are gone.

Here is the rest of our current schedule. 2024 will be the first schedule to truly reflect this new strategy.

2026
9/5 - at Wyoming

2027
09/11 - Texas Tech
10/30 - Army

When all of the remaining Body-Bag games are over, North Texas should play at least 6 home games every season, and possibly 7 home games every other season. It should look like this...

Home/Away- P5 program
Home/Away- one of the better MWC/AAC programs
Home/Away- MAC/Sun Belt program
Home- FCS
