Ohio Parents Could Lose Custody of 17-Year-Old
Quote:An Ohio court will soon decide if the parents of a teen girl — who identifies as a transgender male — should lose custody because they object to their 17-year-old child’s gender transition.

Medical experts working with the teenager said the father’s refusal to acknowledge his daughter’s preferred male pronouns has triggered suicidal ideation. The young girl was hospitalized in 2016 and “has been diagnosed with depression, an anxiety disorder, and gender dysphoria.”

The unnamed teenager is in the temporary legal custody of Hamilton County Job and Family Services and is living with her maternal grandparents, who want permanent custody and are supportive of their granddaughter’s gender identity.

Attorney Paul Hunt, who is representing the teen’s court-appointed guardian, said, “We think the grandparents are the ones who have an open mind and will ... make this sort of decision best for the child.”

“The parents have clearly indicated that they’re not open to it,” he added.

The parents, though, see the situation much differently, according to their attorney Karen Brinkman. The girl’s parents believe giving the grandparents custody “would simply be a way for the child to circumvent the necessity of parents’ consent,” Brinkman told The Christian Post.

Brinkman said the Ohio parents don’t believe their daughter is in a healthy mental state and able to make a decision as serious as beginning to transition. They have “done their due diligence contacting medical professionals, collecting thousands of hours of research,” she noted.

Moving forward, the court’s decision will have serious and far-reaching implications for the autonomy parents have to care for their minor children.

“If the judge rules in favor of the ideologically driven gender clinic, the ability of all parents to protect their children of any age from all aspects of this social and medical experiment will take a tremendous hit,” Michelle Cretella president of the American College of Pediatricians, told the Post.

Grandparents tend to spoil the child. They don't have to live with the consequences.

Once the girl is no longer a minor and graduates high school, she is free to do what she wants. Sounds like the grandparents are interfering in the parenting, and need to be held responsible.

The American College of Pediatricians represents approximately 500 people, some of whom do not actively practice medicine (or may not even be doctors). They appear to exist for the express purpose of demonizing Gay and Trans persons.

They are opposed by the 500,000 members of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatricians.

The use of the American College of Pediatricians as a source, without quoting the AAP or noting the extreme controversial positions of the ACP is pretty much a disqualifier for the article.

Your suggestion that the positions represented by the AMA, AAP, ACP or any other acronym should have relevance in this child custody case is misplaced. Allowing a minor with a questionable mental state to make an irreversible life decision is up to the parents. I may strongly disagree with those parents who allow their children to take pre-surgical transition steps prior to age 18, but it is their responsibility to look after the welfare of their child, so it is their decision to make.

This all too recent transgender fad may help the mental well-being of a few individuals, but I suspect that we are going to have a whole boatload of people with "buyers remorse" in a few years. A lot of these transitioned people are going to realize that mutilating one's genitalia and taking some hormones doesn't change who you actually are. But oops, what's done is done.

No one who is not considered a legal adult should be allowed to make any life decision or begin any process prior to becoming an adult. And no parent should have to watch its government or legal system usurp their parental responsibility, except in cases of the child's welfare. This should be a slam dunk win for the parents, but in this era of stupidity, anything could happen.

17? Why didn't it just wait just a little longer and then none of the parent stuff would legally matter?

Because (in whiny voice), "I want what I want and I want it NOW!"

17. She suffers from impatience too. Any body parts you want to cut off to treat that mental compulsion Tom?

Two possibilities

1 - She really is *that* suicidal (Though I'd argue that being that suicidal is a sign of other issues that daddy calling her "him" is not going to fix.)

2 - Someone on the left is using her to establish a precedent so that the next case can involve a younger kid.

So who's insurance is paying for her "treatments"? You wouldn't think a 17 year old could afford it. So while granny supports her I wonder how much support it would be if Daddy took her off his insurance? But since she's in the temporary legal custody of Hamilton County Job and Family Services. Medicaid is probably going to pick up the bill once Granny gets custody. And I personally think that has more to do with her not wanting to wait till she's 18

The child's mental state isn't in question here.

They have research on their side...you have conjecture, that flies directly in opposition to 99.9% (1000 to 1) of practicing medical professionals and research on this issue.

No one does this lightly.

If the courts/justice department would be more involved in tweets that state, "I'm gonna be a professional school shooter" than in this transgender BS? We'd be the better for it in this country.

The child's mental state is precisely why she is currently living with her grandparents, so you are just wrong. You can also keep repeating your inaccurate statements regarding the number of doctors that support your way of thinking, but you misrepresent the facts. I was a member of the APA, but I didn't bow to every word that came out of the mouths of the Board of Directors, nor did I worship the DSM. Somewhere along the line, I learned to think for myself and I suspect that of the 99.9% of doctors you reference, the vast majority recognize that you can change someone's appearance and you can change the functionality of their genitalia, but you can't actually change their sex.

All you have to do is do a leisurely search through youtube to find plenty of examples of people who approach their sexual identity with the conviction of someone deciding what toppings to get on their pizza. It is a social media fad, driven by bored kids seeking attention, just as the goths did, and all of the other teenaged fads that preceded them. The difference here is that some of the choices made by these impressionable children could literally scar them for life.

Um, yes, yes it is. That is all that's in question. Certainly not the sex of the girl. That isn't in question. That's firmly established. And if you aren't going to treat her mental problems but instead encourage body mutilation, you are in fact taking the actual problem lightly.

The kid is disabled/mentally ill.

The parents should do whatever they feel is right, as is their right.

Doing anything else impinges on the sacred right of parents to guide the future of their children by making medical decisions.

The kid is a year away from the age of majority and can do what it wants at that point.

I don't really understand your question but will answer in a way I think you are asking.

If granny gets custody, it will be temporary at this point, and family court doesn't move fast on taking away a mothers or fathers permanent rights. Not even for a 17 year old. I think the girl will still be under the control of Family Services as far as health care coverage...Medicaid. That's the way this would play out in KY but could be different in Ohio. But after rereading what was posted...it doesn't say how long this has been in the system. Just my personal opinion but I think she's going this route to get this treatment paid for. If not just wait a few months
