Carolina Hurricanes College Colors Night
So, the Canes did special ticket packages for ECU, NC State, Duke and UNC (which included a Canes hat with the school logo), and ECU and NC State tied for most tix sold.

ECU night was last weekend.

As a side note, an SMU grad recently bought the Carolina Hurricanes. Is there anything SMU can't buy? 03-wink

I went to that game and there was a very large ECU contingent in the stands, however other than the hats you would never have known it was ECU night. The Hurricanes played Purple Haze once, and one of the storm squad gave a shout out to ECU fans on the mic before proceeding to play a Duke vs Carolina theme trivia game. What a slap in the face. Glad the Hurricanes won though, and are starting to look like a real hockey team again.

It may be obvious but why not Wake Forest? Even further, to brand them as "Carolina" - why not South Carolina or Clemson?

I can understand not doing it for Charlotte, Appalachian St, or Coastal Carolina.

RE: Carolina Hurricanes College Colors Night
So here is my story tied to that night last Saturday:

I was finally off on this night and could go so I did. I had no idea the hats were tied to tickets and I was just going to buy one outright. I get up to the arena and find out they were but the guy at The Eye said I could walk down and see if they would sell one separately. On my way to that counter a random guy saw my ECU hockey jersey and came up to me and said "I see you are a ECU fan, would you like these hats?" I was like sure and thank you! So I scored two free hats, of which I kept one and gave the other to the guy who came with me to the game. I think they look pretty sweet and I like the fact the purple is the right shade.

But yeah, Vonta Leach doing the opening warning siren was great but, to have the trivia question be about Duke and UNC kind of ticked me, my friend, and several ECU fans up in my section off. That said, I haven't been there on any of their other college nights so I can't say how they do it with other schools.

Of course the new owner wants to cash in on Hartford considering the Whalers merchandise has remained a Top 5 brand in NHL sales. Karmanos was an idiot for not doing so. Total upgrade in ownership for Hurricane fans.

I think the tie-in is just hats/ticket packages, but yeah, more ECU stuff would make sense. The purple haze was a weird remix.

The trivia being duke vs Carolina was to promote the next two college nights, because they haven't sold out their allotments like NC State and ECU did.

Agree, even if he is an SMU grad.

They did a purple practice jersey a few years ago but at the price, it was a little out of my range for the novelty of a purple Canes jersey. I probably should have bought it though LOL>

I sure didn't see any of the Whalers gear in The Eye the last two games I attended, which were within the last week and half. I don't mind bringing back the past for some retro kind of stuff but since this a team that moved from Hartford to Raleigh, a non-traditional market, I would want to blaze our own path with the Hurricanes branding in our area to solidify the fan base of the team/franchise. Making too many ties back to the Whalers makes newcomers feel like they should have stayed in Hartford instead of coming here.

That's fair. But having a single throwback game and/or recognizing your history helps the franchise much more than hurting it. Sales don't lie. Your new owner seems like a much more intelligent businessman.

I saw gray t-shirts and white whalers jerseys last game in the eye. I'm waiting for the jersey number t-shirts of Francis and Wesley. If I get Whalers gear it will have some tie-in to the Canes.

There were several people there in Whalers gear, as for nothing being in The Eye yet, give it time. He's only been owner for about a month.

I'm at the game right now, it's Duke night and same deal, minimal Duke themed stuff. Although their mascot is here.

I saw quite a few of those hats at today's baseball game. They are pretty slick I gotta admit.

WFU doesn’t have a very large fan base. Raleigh is also pretty far from USCe or Clemson

Oddly enough, I think a Syracuse night would work. There are a ton of Syracuse fans around here for some reason. VT night would also probably do better than Wake or Duke.
