Memphis has lost five out of the last six and former players have gone public in saying it was a bad hire. The attendance is down to 6K (this is a program that just a few years ago averaged over 16K).

With $9.1 million still due and having winning seasons in his two seasons there, I would be surprised.

Memphis has been on a steady decline since before Tubby showed up. This will be 4 years in a row with no postseason I believe.

Unless they can get a hometown deal from Penny. He has some studs on his team he could bring with them led by James Wiseman.

Houston tried that with Clyde the Glide Drexler to famously terrible results.

This conference is no place for learning how to coach in your first gig above an AAU squad where its the wild west. Penny dealing with the compliance office would be hysterical. They'd be on probation in 2 years.

I think AK proved a slightly above average head coach at a job that is really difficult, where few coaches have had any sustained success. For Ole Miss to become an annual tournament team it needs a great coach. AK wasn't that. Makes sense to try to find someone like that at this point.

What killed him is that you can't just play a bad OOC schedule and then go .500 in a middlin' SEC anymore to get to 20 wins.

The SEC improved across the board and raised the bar in terms of the coaches being brought in over the past 3 years while Ole Miss went the other way.

Word is Ole Miss is targeting the guy from East Tennessee that got a one year for cause while on Pearl's UT staff. But he may be a hot commodity.

Steve Forbes. I think the guys on the Memphis board are mentioning this guy as well. I'm assuming Memphis is still the better job.

Whomever takes the Memphis job if they make that $9 milll payout is not getting top flight $$ on the deal. There is a limit to the cash you can outlay for basketball in a conference like the AAC without a big media deal.

You wonder how long Frank Haith has with Tulsa. He did make the NCAAT two seasons ago but lost in the first four. It doesn't appear his product is putting butts in the seats either.

What about Dick Pitino, Minnesota? It may be unfair but he can't even tie his ol' man's shoes let alone try them on.

Danny Manning, Wake Forest. Sad what's happened to that program since the passing of Skip Prosser.

You have to believe Danny Hurley is on some short lists. He's rebuilt the Rhode Island program that hasn't been seen since the Jim Harrick days.

I wonder if Tom Izzo is on the block despite on the court success. Same with Bruce Pearl when that investigation wraps up.

There might be a lot of surprising openings this summer.

Pastner (formerly Memphis, now Georgia Tech) has been accused of some sort of sexual harassment/assault. It's hard to see how anyone survives that type of allegation in this day and age.

Also Colorado State is parting ways with Larry Eustachy.

How has Eustachian Boob lasted this long? Dude has so many skeletons (and bottles) in his closet. There's been trouble everywhere he has coached.

Pastner filed a defamation suit against the person (and her boyfriend) who has now filed a sexual harassment claim against him. I know it's an ugly topic/bad press but in the case that Pastner is innocent, he deserves his day in court. This is only his second season at GT and after what Gregory did to the program I can't believe they won't give him a few more years (he's only in year 2) pending the lawsuits of course.

The details on that Pastner case is nuts. Dueling lawsuits, alleged attempted blackmail, NCAA violations, requests for bribes...its a real piece of work.

If Texas misses the tourney, does Shaka Smart lose his job? Texas isn't paying him $3 million a year for NIT runs - and they didn't even make the NIT last year (11-22).

At this point? No. Texas has shown improvement this season, they are clearly on an upward trajectory with Smart. If they are still in this position next year, things will warm up.

It also helps that there is no obvious hot commodity coach out there for Texas to go after. But Shaka Smart is relatively safe at the moment.

I'd say Shaka is safe for now. He has been pulling in top 10 classes every year. His PG got Leukemia this season, so I'm sure that was a set back as well.

They were going to finish the season on a double digit losing streak. Apparently the players said they were done, too.
