Blazer Almanac - February 11
February 11

A quick congratulations to Chris Cokley who became UAB's 2nd best rebounder of all time last night. He has 812 rebounds and passed Lawrence Kinnard on the list. Jerome Mincy has 933.

UAB is 7-5 in games played on 2-11

1982 - The only non conference game played today was in 1982 when UAB played at Saint Louis. The Blazers won 79-63. Oliver Robinson had 28 points.

1984 - UAB hosted South Alabama in a very close game. UAB had a 49-46 lead with 37 seconds to go despite missing three front ends of one and ones in the last five minutes. Terry Catledge for South Alabama cut the lead to one, and after UAB missed another front end, the Jaguars took the lead with three seconds to go. Marvin Ray Johnson threw the ball to Steve Mitchell, who dribbled once and then let a 25 footer fly. The ball went thru the basket as the horn sounded and UAB won 51-50. Players and fans mobbed Mitchell at midcourt burying him in a pile on the floor as Jaguar coach Cliff Ellis stared in shock. "We were very fortunate." Coach Bartow understated.

1988 - Coming off the big win over hopeful #1 BYU, the Blazers fell back to earth when they hosted Charlotte. Charlotte was 15-6 and 7-1 in conference and had won 5 in a row. However they were also 0-9 in Birmingham coming into this game. Charlotte opened the game 8-0 and never trailed, leading by as much as 26 at one point. UAB hit a few threes late in the game to make the score more respectable. UAB lost 86-79.

1991 - UAB hosted Old Dominion, who they had lost to four days ago in Norfolk. Almost all the Blazers were ailing or injured from sprained ankles and jammed fingers to cut lips, sore knees and even chicken pox. Andy Kennedy hit the game winner with 1:36 to go and UAB won 79-77. NBA scouts were present to see Andy Kennedy had 27 points and ODU's Chris Gatling, who had 30.

1995 - UAB lost at DePaul 88-78. Leonard Bush led UAB with 27 points.

1999 - UAB hosted Memphis on this date. The Tigers were 10-11 and 3-7 and UAB had a 3.5 game lead in the National Division of CUSA. However, the Blazers were playing without Myron Ransom who had been suspended for violation of an unspecified team rule. UAB led by 16 at one point in the first half, but Memphis cut it to 7 by halftime. In the second half, the Tigers Jimmy "Snap" Hunter led Memphis back. He scored 29 points in the game on 13 of 24 shooting. Memphis led by one with 1:05 left in the game. Although down by one, UAB's Damon Cobb attempted a three that missed. UAB had a chance to tie on the last possession but threes by Fred Williams and Willie Mitchell missed and UAB lost 78-75.

2004 - UAB won at Southern Miss 69-65. Gabe Kennedy had 16 points.

2006 - The Blazers hosted East Carolina but shot poorly in the first half, resulting in a 28-25 lead for UAB at the half. UAB opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 10 point lead. Marvett McDonald scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half and UAB won 72-64.

2012 - Blazers traveled to Memphis and lost their 12th straight in humiliating fashion. Memphis hit their first seven three pointers and shut down UAB's leading scorers, Cameron Moore and Jordan Swing who combined for 1 of 11 from the field. Memphis ended the night shooting 14 of 24 from the Rhee point line and won 79-45.

2016 - UAB defeated Southern Miss in an exciting double overtime game this date, two years ago. Down two with 1:05 to play in regulation, Chris Cokley dunked the ball to send the game to overtime. In the first overtime, both teams traded baskets, but Southern Miss took a two point lead with 14 seconds to go. Nick Norton scored on a layup with 6 seconds to go to send the game to a second overtime. In the second overtime, jumpers by Chris Cokley and William Lee gave UAB a four point lead and the held on to win 80-77. Chris Cokley had 17 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Lee had 15 and Norton had 14. The Blazers have played 5 double overtime games in their history and are 2-3.

2017 - UAB hosted Old Dominion in the 8th annual Gene Bartow Classic. UAB welcomed back former players and coaches to Bartow Arena. Unfortunately defense was not an invitee. Old Dominion shot 60% in the first half, but got even hotter in the second half, shooting 72% and 66% for the game. The Monarchs ruined the celebration of Coach Bartow by demolishing the Blazers 83-62. William Lee was the lone player to reach double figures with 26 points.
