Sorry, one correction. VCU and ODU both won 2 championships each before they left the conference 6 years ago. UNCW represents the only current conference member with multiple titles.
Great post, TribePride91! One question, though: what timeframe are you using for your calculations of how many tournaments the other schools have won? It is clearly not "all-time CAA" but it also appears not to be just "the Shaver years" because VCU won 4 and ODU and UNCW each won 3 just since March 2004 (Shaver's first year, I believe).
Here are the tournament records for all the current CAA teams (includes the 1983-1985 ECAC South years):
W L Pct
UNCW 39 26 60%
Northeastern 12 11 52%
Charleston 4 4 50%
JMU 27 32 46%
Hofstra 13 16 45%
Delaware 12 15 44%
Towson 8 15 35%
W&M 18 35 34%
Drexel 7 16 30%
Elon 1 3 25%
JMU has won the tourney 3 times (83, 94, 13); UNCW has won it 6 times (00, 02, 03, 06, 16, 17). VCU had the best tournament winning percentage (70%), followed closely by Richmond and Navy at 67% and ODU at 66%. Delaware and East Carolina are the only schools to win a tourney final but never lose a tourney final (both 1-0 in finals).

Being a Tribe fan is all about cheering against the odds and always expecting the unexpected.
I agree that tournaments should be taken one game at a time.
Now that we know we don't play until Sunday, I just want to make it to Monday. Only then will I think about making it to Tuesday.
Now, that is a long time Tribe fan. I have found myself on a few occasions thinking of the next step too early(Friday's baseball game, 2014 with 130 to go(basketball), and 2009 Dec 13th at halftime(football). I also know that it does not actually affect the outcome. I am not planning for Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday morning. I will watch and root on Sunday and then we will see. One of the most joyful times as a fan was the year we beat VCU in Richmond(95?). We gleefully went to get our tickets for the ODU contest for the semifinals. Then, though there was almost a lack of understanding of what might come next. I do remember despising Odell Hodge and his great inside game. That was 1 of only 2 times a 2nd ticket was ever needed from the day I arrived at W&M until
Other than the few games we have already mentioned, Charlie's 98 team hurt the most. That team was so fun and so unexpected. Had Randy Bracey not gotten hurt, it might have been so different. Still also upset 20 years later that there was no more basketball for that team.
Let's hope for this week and next. It is good to have something positive during the winter especially in a time where hope seems in short supply in so many situations. I know this, I was shocked when Matt's shot did not go in Saturday and also when Connor's did not go in. It was more than just hope, it was belief. I'll listen tonight online knowing that some of you will be at Paul's conveying your encouragement and belief(and hopefully eating a great sandwich(and maybe winning a TV??).

RE: Coaching Carousel
Zorch, thanks. I conveniently began with Coach Shaver's first trip to the finals in 2008. I fully recognize we can pick any date. I am well acquainted with the success of VCU and ODU(from the 90's and 2000's). Mason was also a frequent victor in the 90's and 2000's. Until Coach Shaver came along, we were one and done every year. Only Charlie's 98 team, the success over VCU in 95' and Mark Batzel's last second shot in 88' kept us from being a complete zero of CAA success from the time I arrived as a freshman in 87(as a student and fan, not a player) until Coach Shaver arrived. So, I am grateful to Charlie Woolum for giving us hope and for Coach Shaver for taking it to another level. As such the 2008 team represented total wonder for many of us. Schneider and Sumner took us on a wild ride in 2009-10 and then everything changed again when Marcus arrived. Again, only my opinion which is not worth any victories.

I think there is only one coach in jeopardy (Matheny at Elon) but what AD would fire a coach right now and hire a new one - not knowing how far the tentacles of the current scandal go?

RE: Coaching Carousel
Shaver has done his BEST coaching at W&M this year! I will be shocked if he does not get COY. This TEAM has bought into the Shaver system and are a joy to watch. Too much talk of "FAKE NEWS" tweets about Coach.

RE: Coaching Carousel
I'm sticking with my projection as Shaver as 3rd in COY voting, behind Coen and Grant (not sure which of those guys get it).
We could get shut out of first-team CAA voting with Knight losing out to Cacock and Cohn losing to Wright-Foreman, Pusica, Chealey and Riller.
I also doubt that Pierce makes second team.
I claim no expertise in these opinions and maybe I'm all wet. On the other hand, there is always the "Wally Walker affect" (see 1976 ACC tournament).

you could be right.... I remember the first COY Shaver won was 2007–08 with a conference record of 10–8 and a 5th place finish. Grant was expected to win this year so if Shaver does not get it then my other vote would be Coen.

He won't be All-CAA, but is there really any doubt that David Cohn is the best true point guard in the league?
He brought his game to an entire new level thus season. A joy to watch play.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Maybe everybody else knew this but I didn't. Surprised to find out about it from Notre Dame media, not our own:
(Mike) Brey joins Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim, Roy Williams, Greg Kampe, Tony Shaver, Tom Izzo, Fran Dunphy, Bob McKillop, Jay Wright and Mark Few as the only current coaches to win 500 or more games while coaching at just one or two schools.
Really amazed Shaver has been able to do this only spending 90 seconds on defense in practice, not knowing the proper time to initiate the offense in end of game situation nor when to foul at the end of the game.
Oh, what could have been!

Everybody knows that Shaver is on the hot seat, and that W&M could easily get one of those other 500 win guys to come to W&M to replace Shaver, and lead the school to the Dance.

RE: Coaching Carousel
All kinds of talk on the internet about the inevitable coaching shake ups throughout the country and the after effects. A couple of thoughts from a tribe perspective... All signs point to URI coach Hurley taking the UConn job. Does URI head assistant and Tribe alum David Cox have the inside track? There is also rumbles of the UNCA coach being a top candidate at MTSU. That could open the door to Coach Kimble at his Alma mater as a candidate, or at least, a top assistant role. Let's be honest, Coach Kimbles opportunity for advancement will be limited as long as HC Shaver and Holmes are here.

Kimble was an assistant coach at UNCA for the three years prior to joining the Tribe in August 2011. His alma mater is Coastal Carolina.

Correct. My bad. Interest would be there regardless, iMO.

Saw where URI had made Tribe alum David Cox "head coach in waiting" when they previously promoted him to associate head coach. If they don't give him the HC job, since Hurley left for UConn, then they have to pay him a buyout amount. Can't imagine he won't be named, and hope the growing Shaver/Tribe tree will result in some better home and home games down the road at Kaplan.

Griff Aldrich, who played for Tony Shaver at Hampden-Sydney and later was one of Shaver’s assistants there is now the head coach at Longwood. Aldrich was on UMBC’s staff.

Looks like Grant signed a contract extension to remain at Charleston.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Charleston paper says Grant will be the highest paid CAA MBB coach at over $400,000/year.
Looks like that what’s W&M needs to plan on paying in the future if it wants the best coach.

Grant could stay there a long time. He's got a good school to recruit for given the location and access to talent in NC, SC, GA and FL without spending a ton on recruiting. It's his home town. Not a bad set up.

RE: Coaching Carousel
Charleston is paying $400K, and the coach said "yes".
URI offered $2 million, and the coach said "no".
It's too early for me to wax eloquent, but this is troubling / informative to me on so many levels.
