I forget which New Orleans team it was (1993 maybe), but they are the only school to record a 16-0 conference mark.

The best Sun Belt bball team of all time?

Definitely not the conference best, but the best App State team was very arguably the 1979 team with Bobby Cremins as coach. We won the SoCon Regular Season, SoCon Tournament, but then lost our first game in the NCAA tournament. No big name wins but just a lot of wins in general. We had an 11 game win streak to close out the season.

2000 was the only other year we made the NCAA tournament in our entire history.

They're not a current member, but didn't UNC Charlotte make the Final Four as an SBC member in 1977?

In terms of the Post 2012 Sun Belt. No question Little Rock a couple years ago. Won 30 games, which is absolutely ridiculous, and pulled off a 12-5 upset over Purdue in the NCAA Tournament.

I wish we had their bracket that year. USA beat WKU twice in 2008 and was an at large team as a #10 seed. We just got matched up with a Butler team that couldn’t miss from 3 point range. I would have rather played Tennessee because we matched up well with them.

Let's open it up.

Got to be current member, but can be before you joined Sun Belt.

Easy. 1972-73 Cajuns. Ranked #4 in the nation, roster included 3 NBA players.

The Cajuns also had a team in the mid 80's that reached the final 4 of the NIT.

Nice. Who was on that team that made it to NBA. Quality wins that year?

I had forgotten about this though...
Quote:In August 1973, Louisiana—then known as Southwestern Louisiana—became only the second school to receive the so-called "death penalty" from the NCAA. The basketball team was found guilty of over 120 violations. Most of them involved small cash payments to players, letting players borrow coaches' and boosters' cars, letting players use university credit cards to buy gas and buying clothes and other objects for players. However, the most severe violations involved massive academic fraud. In the most egregious case, an assistant coach altered a recruit's high school transcript and forged the principal's signature. Several boosters arranged for surrogates to take college entrance exams for prospective recruits. The NCAA Council found the violations so egregious that it wanted to throw Southwestern Louisiana out of the NCAA altogether. It settled for scrubbing the Ragin' Cajuns' 1972 and 1973 NCAA Tournament appearances from the books and canceling the 1973–74 and 1974–75 seasons.

Werent your violations in 2007 and our violations around that same time involving the same compliance officer? We hired them after you let them go, right?

Same one.

'73 team had Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron and Freddie Saunders. Lamar and Ebron did not have great careers, but Saunders played 10+ years as a contributing player for the Celtics. Bestablished win was Houston with Elvin Hayes.

RE: The best Sun Belt bball team of all time?
I've been covering the league a long time. Here are some of the better teams.

1992- Louisiana defeated Oklahoma in the NCAA tournament and then lost in the second round to NMSU. The Ags shot 34 free throws, the Cajuns six. Two of the Cajuns on that team finished in the top ten all time in scoring.

1993--New Orleans is still the last SBC team to win every conference game. They lost in the tournament finals to WKU who went to the sweet 16 and came within four points of the Elite Eight.

1997--South Alabama had a really good team. Won the regular season and tournament title under the late Bill Musselman. Led Arizona by double digits with five minutes left but couldn't close the deal. Arizona won the national championship.

The South Alabama and Middle Tennessee at large teams in 2008 and 2011 were really good.

That Little Rock team two years ago was as good as ANY Sun Belt team in the last quarter century.

But an earlier poster was right. That 72-73 Cajuns team was stupid good. Got featured on the cover of SI as a team that could end UCLA's dynasty. I don't think any team has come close to them.

True story: I was in 6th grade in 1997 and was really messing around with creating NCAA Brackets for the first time. Family member got free tickets to UALR a lot back then, so I got a lot of exposure to Sun Belt basketball, and I remember watching that South Alabama team. I also remember vividly watching them play Arizona that season, and how bummed I was they didn't hold on to win that game.

So, in 1998 as a care free 7th grader, I had a Social Studies teacher, who like all sane people decided to seek the input of middle schoolers when creating his NCAA Bracket. I insisted that I knew something very few did and got him to take South to beat Illinois and make the sweet 16. They got slaughtered in round 1, and he never asked for my advice on basketball again. That didn't stop be from spending most of my Middle and High school years trying to convince teachers to let me pick their NCAA bracket for them because I knew about all the teams no one else did.

It’s sad to think we used to have a good basketball program. At least we have a football team now....and we have baseball to look forward to throughout basketball season.

You'll get used to basketball killing time between football and baseball seasons eventually.

My interest in Arkansas State basketball is going to wane considerably in about 5 days time.

Was wondering if/when the last time someone has done that.

Of the current members, it's looking like the 72-73 Cajuns team is king.
With a South Alabama team taking the post-1978 award.

So who was better? 80-81 USA or 97-98 USA?

We have a history of any contender teams tanking in the SBC tournament.
