Not very often you get to say best wishes to a brand new program. But the Pirates' Lacrosse team has their first ever game on Saturday.

I plan on being much more informed one year from now, but confess to not fully knowing the strength of Cincinnati, Connecticut, and Temple in the sport. Plus affiliates Florida and Vanderbilt.

Any of our Florida schools thinking about starting teams?

I don't really know of any other schools located in fertile recruiting grounds. I know it's mainly big out east and uer Midwest. Looks like a power House league though. Very similar to AAC baseball.

Florida won the Big East the last three seasons (ie since they joined). They should continue to be the favorite in the AAC.

Cincinnati's women's lacrosse team is one of the worst organized athletics teams I've ever witnessed.

Lacrosse tends to skew toward a higher-income population im the northeast. People might laugh, but with their academic rankings Tulane could conceivably start up a program and pull a bunch of kids out of real high-end eastern prep schools that can afford to pay their way just by promising them a spot on the team.

Ok, I'll go ahead and say it. I don't understand this. That's kind of a general statement, but specifically...

If we're in the same conference as Cindy, UConn, Temple, Florida, and Vandy, why are only two of them on the schedule?

ECU added WLAX for this year, but the AAC doesn't split from the Big East until next season. ECU is Independent this year.

Uggh ECU fans and reading comprehension.

The link just had the schedule, nothing about conference realignment. From the previous posts, it just looked like Florida and Vandy were joining a pre-existing AAC.

It's been discussed at length by the Tulane fan base. Our club lacrosse teams are popular, and actually New Orleans itself has a rapidly growing lacrosse scene at the high school level. But Tulane's athletic department is very particular about which sports it sponsors. Sailing is being made varsity because of a huge donation, and rumor has it men's golf will do the same soon. It'll be a while if we do ever add lax.

Tulane doesn't have men's golf? That seems surprising. And, given Tulane's national student body and general affluence, women's lacrosse seems a no-brainer.

Yep. Not well explained on the ECU or American websites. Found it on the Big East site:
BIG EAST Announces Change To Women’s Lacrosse Lineup Starting In 2019
So, ECU actually starts conference play in 2019.

Nah because there aren’t enough other schools in the gulf south for us to play. Makes way more sense for ECU because they can very easily build a full schedule that wouldn’t require absurd travel and cost.

This is a map that shows why Tulane won’t be starting a program any time in the foreseeable future... you need other D1 schools within 700 miles to actually play.

Given that Denver and Marquette have been the two most successful programs in the Big East on the men's side (by the way, that's an outdated map of men's programs, not women's lacrosse), I don't think that's actually true. I have a hard time believing that something that's entirely successful for Denver is totally out of reach for Tulane, hockey excepted.

Denver and Marquette don't play football.

.....and plenty of lacrosse-sponsoring schools do. None of this addresses the idea that Tulane could probably field a competitive women's program if they wanted to. I don't need anyone to let me know the will to fund it isn't currently there, because obviously - if the will was there they'd have a team already.

I think Tulane would probably be more willing if the two Florida schools got involved. That would mean easy road trips to Tennessee and Florida. Much more feasible then right now half their games would be east coast/ new england

Been two years, but was told a $40,000,000 donation would bring lacrosse to SMU. That would endow the lacrosse team and the women's sport that would need to be added.
