Wow.

Kinda. Space X is heavily dependent on government grants. Received over 5 billion in government funding already.

I think his point was the money was better invested in the private sector vs NASA and the tag-a-alongs that would've raised the investment/time factor x10 relative to the yield.....

Dont disagree but its not really capitalism if you are being substantiallu subsidized government grants.

I am for private/public partnerships like this by the way.

like alternative energy (which I've lobbied for subsidizing where rational), ya simply have to start somewhere.....

we already have realized the benefit of the robber baron era.....I still believe there are lessons to be learned from that....

now it's become a game of stripping down government to allow competition to evolve....

in this case, I have zero problem with initially developing a monopoly by subsidizing the best of the rest that submitted designs upon start-up.....Musk won.....and he's proving the value of that investment and decision.....

the gov't can always step in at a later date once the technology and design becomes ubiquitous and legislate (if req'd) to allow competition to take over.....

that methodology is the basis of capitalism and growth.....

Space X and everyone else trying to get in the game started off by using the work NASA has done.

The government completely bore the cost of a lot highlight reel failures to get the technology worked out.
Now we are in phase two where the government is putting some money in it but private money is joining it because it is proven enough technology to make a private investment feasible.
Maybe some day we move to phase three and the government is just another customer for these guys.

XACLY!

who in their right mind would lay out that kind of capital out of the gate......it would never get off the ground (pardon the pun)

this is another long term investment funded by the taxpayer......to date, this type of subsidized investing hasn't let us down.....

have some failed.....no question......however, look where we're at vs the '70s........

we have to stay ahead of the technological curve......

True, but they are actually performing a service for that money, not just getting money to play with. If you support NASA, it is a good investment IMO.

Reminds me of the pride I felt as a kid watching the Saturn V. When I saw those rockets touch down upright. Damn man, that is awesome.
