AAC baseball preview for 2018
Hard to believe that baseball season will be starting soon....

Baseball America preview of the AAC

FWIW, UCF ranked #22nd. The conference has a big opportunity sitting in front of itself this year with potentially 4 or 5 teams having the ability to be ranked at one point or another...

EDIT: Officially speaking, Houston is ranked #24....

https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1

DOUBLE EDIT: USF also receiving top 25 votes.

Seven AAC teams in the top 100 in RPI.

SUMMATION: We got a damn good Baseball conference, folks. Lots of depth too. Something fun to talk about once March Madness ends.

First preview (of the dozen or so) I've seen that didn't have Houston winning the AAC.

Houston is a great team. If Wichita can get back we can have 4 or 5 ranked teams this year.

We have some unknowns. A lot of freshmen & sophomores that were beginning to break out at the end of last season, but will really need to take it to another level if we're going to be a team that can threaten to make a run. Guys like Lockhart, Triolo, Bielamowicz, Padgett.

We lost our #2 starter (Ullom) to a season ending injury, so that sucks. Joe Davis is coming off an injury as well.

I'm interested to see how ECU bounces back.

I was surprised by this. Somebody was sleeping on Houston.

Look at it like this, the beat downs should be epic and will move the change at the top right along. Dare I say accelerate it.

This conference is absurdly loaded for baseball. Is there a team who couldn't make the ncaa's over the next year or two? Everyone seems a threat and solid programs. Kids will want to play in that kind of a conference.

Beating a dead horse but I wish Tulsa would bring back baseball.

UC needs some work but I think they have found a coach that can get them to win consistently. UC has shown even in the past couple of years they have the talent to beat top level and highly ranked teams.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how the coaching change plays out, particularly given that we were on an upward trajectory. And, at the very least, we're giving our conference mates a good ballpark to play a game in.

I love Cliff Godwin, he says the right things, forces his players to play the right way, is an Eastern NC and ECU guy but there is absolutely no reason he should miss a regional again this year. He's talked a big game, has a couple top 25 recruiting classes, has big bats/arms this year, has All-Americans, got a raise and promises for facility upgrades he wants. Last year was just embarrassing but was to be expected when you lose two All-Americans, this year we need to win 38-40 games and compete for the league title.

I know that seems harsh but ECU baseball is one thing where fans need to continue to demand a coach that keeps us nationally relevant, it's our one legit shot to win a NC in something.

RE: AAC baseball preview for 2018
Not sure how you can label the AAC a Mid-Major, considering the league is always Top 3-Top 5 in the country. Life of a non-cartel...sigh. But it's nice to be recognized, even if it's in a back-handed kind of way, I guess.

5 Mid-Majors Who Could Pull a Coastal

– HOUSTON
The AAC regular and tournament champions return with a hyper amount of experience and hopes of going a step or two further in the post-season after hosting a Regional last season. Coach Todd Whitting says a trip to Omaha is a “When, not if” proposition for the Cougars.

The key is: Health and welfare
Last year, UofH had some injury issues and the psycho-circus that was ace Seth Romero, who was eventually kicked off the team. With smoother sailing, and a ton of experience, this could be UofH’s breakthrough year.

– CONNECTICUT
There is a lot of draftable talent on this year’s Husky squad, the most since 2011. LHP Tim Cate pitched for Team USA and three talents were Cape Cod League All Stars last summer in C Zac Susi, LF John Toppa and LHP P.J. Poulin. Plus, last year’s NCAA snub will be a driving force for this team all season long.

The key is: Not to run out of gas
Coach Jim Penders told me that the 2017 Huskies spent 51 of their first 82 days on the road, and it was a drain. That fatigue contributed to a 9-7 month of May. This time his squad is a more upperclassmen-led, so the hope is they are used to the college grind and have more stamina for a June push.

Oh man! I'm pumped! The early-February no sports void has seemed a little longer this year with the poor super bowl matchup. February 16th can't get here fast enough.

Yep, and I wonder if in the next breathe, he has the nerve to say that the Big 10+1+1+2 is actually a MAJOR conference in baseball ahead of us? Good grief.

With two extremely high-rated players, it will be interesting to see how the Shockers enter the league.

On a side note, I would like to think that at least the UConn baseball coach sees the value of the AAC for his program. In contrast to the Big East which is often a one-bid conference. And it certainly appears now that the Huskies have been accumulating talent that perhaps was attracted to Storrs via much stronger league.

The league is definitely an upgrade and he's acknowledged such.

You can make an argument that the Big West and Sun Belt are stronger as well.
