RE: Baseball 2018
I don't agree with you about Murphy, and the jury is out for me. The coach before him was legit and we should have tried to keep him. Murphy's recruits are on the team now and we'll see how it goes. I don't see him as a long term answer, and quite frankly he shouldn't want to be here long term given his salary. The big problem that Tribe baseball faces is that they pay the coach somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-80k. That's not a lot of money. When you start digging in to the numbers you will be stunned at how much we don't pay our coaches in almost every sport. When I played, my coach was also teaching in the Kinesiology department so at least he had his teacher salary to fall back on. We all talk about hoops being on a shoe string. Just think how bad it is in the non-revenue sports.

Do you really think so? I feel like we could lose every game this year and Murphy would be ok. He's brought the program to a place of consistent success.

But hopefully that doesn't happen so we'll never have to find out.

I think a little unfair to compare Pinzino and Murphy. Pinzino was great but immediately left to take an assistant job at a P5 school (Oklahoma). Since then all he's done is fallen. I think he's currently the pitching coach at West Point. Still don't understand the decisions that went into him leaving. Anyway, Murphy is definitely still better than Leoni.

There was a pretty good crowd at the game today, at least according to the concession stand workers that ran out of many things.

I couldn't agree with you more on the last sentence.

Tribe down 2-0, top of the sixth with men on 1st and 2nd with one out. UVA has pulled their starter. Need to get some runs across this inning.

Loaded bases with a walk, then fielder's choice and pop up. Only got one run across. 2-1, bottom of the sixth.

Ugh. Up 3-2 in the bottom of the 11th, but UVA has the bases loaded with 1 out due to shoddy pitching. 4 pitch walk, hit by pitch...

Got the lead thanks to multiple errors in the top of the 11th, but now struggling again to close it out. A bloop hit, HBP and walk have loaded the bases. Only 1 out. Man, we struggle to get the last 3 outs. Bullpen did a great job for the 4 prior innings.

What is it with us losing to ACC squads by 1 run?

And, UVA is willing to play us in football and baseball but not basketball? Jokers

What? No hits in 11 innings and we still could have won the game! Winning a game (against UVA, no less) in that fashion would have been SO plump! I'll have to check out that boxscore.

Ignominious loss on two run error with two out in bottom of 11th shown in full on SportsCenter this morning.

Might not our guy went back and touched third base for game ending force out instead of throwing wildly to first?

You might not want to look at team batting stats through nine games. We have no power whatsoever.

It made Sportscenter, basically a training video "How NOT to play Baseball"

RE: Baseball 2018
Now that I have checked out the boxscore and play-by-play, it is a good thing for my health that I didn't see that game (I would have watched it except that I forgot that it was on).

Not having seen the game, how gassed was Wade Strain after his three innings? He gave up no hits and only 3 walks, no HBPs or wild pitches -- in short, he pitched well. Then, with the lead, Murphy brings in Robert White who gives up a hit to his first batter, and a HBP to the second (two things that Strain did not do in 3 innings of work). Yes, W&M could still have gotten out of the jam and secured the win ---- but didn't.

If Strain still had some gas left in the tank then maybe Murphy should have kept him out there. Not having seen the game, I don't know. It does have a resemblance to the first game against Clemson, though, where Murphy took out Bodie Sheehan too soon. Need to recognize when a pitcher has the hot hand ...and go with it.

The game was a mess on both sides. There were only 8 hits (all by UVA), a combined 18 walks and hit by pitch, three wild pitches (all by UVA), six errors and more unearned runs (4) than earned runs (3).

Don't think you can compare the 2 situations. Not sure what Strain's pitch count was at, but he is somebody that isn't used to going that long.

Sheehan threw 100+ pitches probably in most of his starts last season, but was pulled after like 80 pitches against Clemson. We win that 1st game against Clemson, and the mentality of the team would have been completely different and maybe led to more wins.
