To piggyback, I find the West’s obsession with supposedly universal values to be nothing short of cultural imperialism—except instead of projecting strength it now projects degeneracy and consumption.

You hear this a lot from the average people in various parts of the world.

Believe it or not, there is not an American in every human being waiting to be set free.

The West is no beacon of moral superiority on the whole. We’ve traded one sense of superiority for another but it’s all the same game.

I guess I'm not ready to look to Russia as the leader of Christianity at this point. Nah, not ready to buy that.

Do I think we would be fools not to foster better relations with them? Yep.

Frankly, we may always be rivals to some degree, but have more in common with them culturally, with religion, etc. than the Far East.

Putin and Russia are a state sponsor of terror. They are not the good guys.

You're missing the point entirely. I didn't say Pat Buchanan was a D. He's a pretty independent guy who founded the Reform party. The article has nothing to do with republicans or democrats. It is about something broader, i.e. culture. The article is neither a praise or condemnation of Putin/Russia. It merely explains that Russia is casting itself as the savior of Christendom against a degenerate West on the world stage.
