Why is it that a few schools have multiple athletes with better times or distances before you see the first UT female show up with their personal best this year. We don't even have a time for the 4x400 relay. 11 women's teams listed - but not one for Toledo. Are we so pathetic that we can't even field enough athletes to have 4 members on the relay team? Not having a men's team has to hurt recruiting for women's team. Shows no commitment to the sport.
No indoor track. That simple.
I guess that would be evidence of the no commitment to the sport. They did not put an indoor track in the Fetterman? I haven't been inside it - so I don't know. BG's indoor facility for football has an indoor track. Not a very good facility overall - but at least they had the foresight to add the indoor track. Seems like women's track at UT is around just for the Title IX "coverage" it provides. It's a shame. If you are going to have a varsity sport and not commit to it, then why have it at all?
I just looked for comparison purposes and see that EMU has 8 men's varsity sports compared to 6 at Toledo. They have wrestling and men's track & field in addition to the same 6 that Toledo has. They have 11 varsity women's teams compared to 9 at Toledo (same 9 as Toledo plus Rowing and Gymnastics).
From all reports - it was indicated that EMU is losing tons of money on their athletic programs and was considering dropping football. I don't know how they can afford to have 19 varsity sports - 4 more than Toledo and likely draw a lot less in sports revenues.
BGSU has 7 men's varsity (Ice Hockey) and 10 women's varsity teams (Gymnastics) - compared to the 6 and 9 at Toledo.
Is Toledo just being more fiscally responsible? How do those sports get paid for?
This may have been covered in the past - but you almost have to wonder why we even bother with some of the sports we have at UT. We suck at some of them - and we still have fewer varisty sports than schools that don't have nearly the revenues that are available at UT.
This should be on a separate thread, but it is likely still beating a dead horse.
