Just like one our short-lived assistant coaches said 10 years ago, “we folded like a cheap suit!” Can someone please explain when there were 33 seconds left in the game why we did not foul immediately? We let BG run 10 seconds off the clock, they then call timout and immediately after the timeout then we foul. I have no idea what kind of strategy that is?

Fallsdog,

Easy street café was very good! Thanks for the suggestion. Made the ride home a little less miserable.

When you spend that much time fouling, you lose. The bonus put BG back in it before halftime. Then we have players come out of the locker room already in some trouble. I thought Buffalo played dirty last week. Maybe that double ejection had a lot to do with us. I hope we don't become that.

Easy Street is good - so is the nearby Reverend's - good selection of beers but maybe a bit more expensive. As was noted before in we're basically a 0.500 team in a mediocre conference (like the game officials).

RE: Kent State @ Bowling Green State University
Over the last few seasons I have realized that I need to find a middle ground for my expectations. Rather than go on a diatribe about what exactly that means I will just say this about yesterdays game.

*No excuse for blowing for a 19 point lead against a team with comprable talent. That falls on the coaching staff.

*Yesterday was a road loss, which makes the above a tad easier to swallow. Yes, it was a road game that Kent State "woulda, coulda, shoulda" and it may come back to bite to the Flashes, but still...road losses are what they are in most leagues.

*We can't forget that this is a young team with little to no depth. Sure, there are a few guys with high talent ceilings, but that isn't going to protect leads or close out games.

*The above makes me shake my head when it comes to the "big recruiting board." How in the world Kent State doesn't have a veteran or at least a 21 year old big man who can rebound and take some minutes from the youngsters in beyond me.

The above is basically a bad, spin, spin, bad sandwich.

Those are all good/ valid points - but BG is a young team as well as is Miami - it just seems like every year we hear about the depth we're going to have and then somehow it doesn't happen. Toledo bolstered their big man issue by finding guys at Missouri and Colorado who basically at schools above where they could get tons of playing time.

I actually believe the rotation has shrunk more than it should. I think Frederick is an adequate big that should be getting some minutes to take some of the load off the starters. To me, there are two things that qualify a post player to get on the court. 1) does he rebound and 2) does he defend. Frederick is 3rd on our team in pace adjusted rebounds and third on our team in defensive box score plus/minus. I think he's capable enough that he's worth keeping involved but at this point his minutes hinge entirely on foul trouble. I'm curious if he's slipped behind Nwankwo now too. Not sure if anyone noticed but Nwankwo got a really brief appearance in the first half yesterday. My concern is cutting both of them out of the rotation increases the chances of them leaving and we continue the carousel of a ton of new guys each year and a lot of growing pains getting it working. Big men more so than guards need to be developed over time.

As for overall depth, that took a big hit when Johnson turned out to be a non factor. His numbers his first two years indicate he should've been able to at least provide some scoring. They also indicate he isn't a very good defender. So ultimately that's my guess why he wasn't given a chance. If you're going to be a bench roll player you're expected to defend (just ask DeBerry). That coupled with the fact that two scholarships are going to guys redshirting means we don't have a lot of active guys. Anyone know by Bernstein wasn't dressed yesterday?

On the topic of post players leaving... I just looked at how Raasean Davis is doing at NC Central. He's second on their team in scoring at 15.6 and first in rebounds at 7.5. But the real crazy stat, he's shooting 70% from the floor. Seems like the competition level is worse, but that's crazy.

I did notice that Nwanko got in late in the first half yesterday. It was the perfect time to give him a few minutes. We were up by 13 points and just needed him to play a little defense in the post and rebound. Unfortunately, he looked lost to me. Too bad as this kid is big and strong!

I agree with you on playing Frederick. While he wasn’t great when I’ve seen him play so far this year he looked good at times. We can’t go on playing eight guys. Frederick is probably our best scoring option off the bench as well.

Have to report what I think was another embarrassing display of low class by Walker. At least twice after making a three he runs by the BG bench waving his arms and taunting them. He’s lucky he did not get a technical. I have no idea why Sendy puts up with this nonsense. It’s a total embarrassment to the team and our university.
