Why doesn't the basketball team warm up? Root of the problem?
We usually start out flat, cannot argue with that.

One thing I have noticed in just about every game is the other team takes the entire pregame period warming up and finding their shooting rhythm. Last night before the game, and my son and I were there an hour before tip off, MTSU came out shooting brick after brick and even missing dunks and steadily improved until they were loose and hitting everything before tip off. ODU was in the locker room almost the entire time and only came out about 5 minutes before the national anthem and ran a couple of useless drills.

I don't know if there is anything to this theory, but would we be better off out there finding our shots and loosening up than in the locker room? Could this partially explain our notoriously slow starts and overall poor outside shooting?

I dont know the answer to your question but my guess is they warm up in the practice facility since it is right behind the Ted.

Did you get up at all in that hour? Because they definitely were out there twice to warm up and it's certainly much longer than 5 minutes.

Maybe, but IMO that would be dumb not to orient themselves with the rims and the site lines and the crowd noise in the arena where the game itself is being played.

They were warming up at the beginning of the hour, left for about 40 minutes (rendering that first warmup useless) and came back and warmed up for about 5 minutes before the anthem.

So, you exaggerated in the first post saying they only warmed up for five minutes? A bit misleading, no?

We can parse semantics, but the warm up was effectively 5 minutes given the 40 minute cool down period after the first and MTSU was out there the whole time. The question stands. Is this something worth looking at and is it affecting how we are starting games and our overall shooting?

So what is the optimal down time when the first warmup is not deemed useless?

You all are being ridiculous. So nobody wants to discuss or refute the theory, got it. At least the premise doesn't seem to be in question. Maybe I should ask: what can we do to to improve the way we start games and shoot better?

It's difficult to refute (or discuss) a theory that is just some off the wall type topic that has zero evidence of credibility. You are coming in thinking there is some amount of time the team should warmup (with no answer to what that is). Then you are claiming if you warm up early, it gets lost if you wait a certain amount of time (with no answer to what that is).

The MT game was tied at the half. We were up 7 on W&M at the half. We were tied with VCU at the half. We were beating WKU at the half.

We seem to be just fine in the first. The second half is where the problems lie. And that boils down to a lack of depth. Changing our pregame warmups isnt going to give our rotation more stamina.

I will say that I watched MTSU warm up and they ran specific drills associated with their offense. It was pretty cool to see how organized they were. They worked post moves while the guards stretched and worked guards catch, one bounce, into a jump shot while the big men stretched. Then I watched us dunking the entire time in layup lines. That is really something special to see. Our guys are layup line monsters. Xavier is really fun to watch.

Until there is a defender. Its like someone with a good golf swing until a ball is tee'd up.

Richard Ross was exciting for me to watch during warm ups. I spend most of the time observing the other team. I don't think warming up is our problem. Dave Twardzik usually talks about our team warming up and I never remember his stating we have a problem with our warm up protocol.

We were in a 21-13 hole 10 minutes into the game last night. We were in a 16-6 hole against WKU. Trailed FIU by 10. Other than Bowling Green and Towson, we really haven't gotten off to any solid leads to start any games all year.

We were rolling Marshall and Richmond in the first half. Dayton, we had a 10 pt lead.

The way we warm up is not the problem.

Ever, I will refute your warm up theory. Our guys are indeed on the floor an hour before the game stretching and working on specific passes and moves. They leave for a while and then come back and shoot for 10-15 minutes, head to the locker room for pre game instructions and then head out for more shooting and lay ups. Happens every game.

This is exactly right. We have been to every home game ( MTSU- long story) an hour an a half and go to the VIP room to watch them warm up. A few players are out there early shooting but they all have to be on the court 60 minutes before tipoff for team drills and warmups.

As mentioned above I missed the MTSU game but did watch it and listen to the pregame. Twardzik was mentioned in an above post. He stated just before tipoff that he did not like the way they performed in warmups. He stated they were trying high flying dunks and seemed to be joking around to much for him. But he also said they were like that in the previous game that they won easily and maybe it was a way to loosen them up. He said he was more old school though and would like to have seen the players taking a more serious approach to the game.

I was at the MTSU game watching warmups from the suite at 6:30. The OP isn't based on any facts.
