RE: UMBC New Arena, could be a good model for W&M
Not to throw cold water on the ongoing complaints with Kaplan (which I think is a great facility for W&M), I brought some friends last Saturday who are new to the area and had never been inside.
They both were shocked it opened in 1970, saying it looked almost brand new. Also commented how loud it can get in there.
With almost 6,000 on hand, this talk of downsizing and gushing over 5,000 seat gyms seems ridiculous.

Agree the seats/court area are in good condition...probably not much wear and tear
UofR Robins Center renovation/downsize
9,071 (1972–2013)
7,201 (2013–present)
A goal of Gold Rush is to have a sellout. Sellouts are good and add hype. 2017 avg attendance for WM was 2,622. 2600 fans are not that loud in a vacuous space. That hurts the experience. A more intimate arena gives the feel of a near sellout game EVERY TIME.
Downsize Kaplan from 8600 to ~6500, with some sort of mezzanine luxury box presence. Also need seats all the way to the floor like most other arenas.
The concourse is horrid. Amenities of a modern arena are severely lacking.
These all help bring in and keep new blood. The current arena/experience does not.

It looks almost brand new compared to the Megalithic Temples of Malta.

And virtually every CAA gym or any north of I-70.
We really are a spoiled, delusional lot sometimes.

Once again, I'm asking if anyone knows of any concrete proof that there is a movement afoot to actually renovate Kaplan or build a new structure. I'm looking for a press release, a vehicle for fundraising, a footnote in a master plan document, or even a public statement of interest by someone in the administration or a WM benefactor with $$MONEY$$. "I believe" and "I think" are well and nice, but I'm searching for anything tangible here.
See 14: Improve William and Mary Hall, $35 million, "Supports total building systems renovation, fire safety, and ADA compliance"

^ How much "game day" experience can you get out of that? I don't know, but I bet that is what they are trying to do.

Practice facility:
Quote:To better support athletes, the master plan proposes the construction of an Athletics Practice Facility near William and Mary Hall. The facility would include basketball practice courts, volleyball practice courts, academic study space, sports medicine and additional strength training facilities. The proposed building site is in the parking lot on the north side of William and Mary Hall.

Taking away the grass practice fields from the football team if they remove the track would be a complete mistake. The team need to be able to practice on both natural and artificial turf.

Why would removing the track have an impact on the practice fields?
Edit: Just read the Flat Hat article. Still doesn't make sense to me. The football team already practices inside Zable sometimes. Would moving the track mean they have to practice in there all the time? Is rec sports clamoring to use the football team's practice fields for IM?

That’s the way it reads to me. That the practice fields become rec facilities.

Probably dual use. Ive played intramural soccer at G5 school football practice fields, so probably not that rare. Im guessing it helps justify upgrading/replacing it sooner using school funds.
