This is long overdue.
On the surface it seems like a no-brainer but as the article suggests it does get complicated quickly.
NCAA rules are slanted to the schools. Change is needed.
Makes sense for the student athlete but it could make it so that the student-athletes could "overthrow" a current coach so they could transfer.

RE: Proposal to allow transfers when head coach leaves
I agree on the post season ban part, but not just because a coach leaves.
This would kill the MAC. A hot coach gets snatched by another school. He then takes his best players with him. Not only did the school get outbid on their coach, they then lose there best players to make it a huge double hit. Most MAC coaches come in as assistants from other schools. Could they former assistants poach players too?

This also says that if a player transfers when the coach has not left he still has to sit a year but he gets that year back at the end which is pretty cool. Also, walkons would be able to transfer without restriction.

The article said that players could not immediately follow the coach to their new school.

NOT in favor of the rule change. Young people very often more than others are likely to see the grass greener on the other side. You make a commitment you should stick to it. I can see perhaps the commits , but not enrolled and maybe the 1st year guys, but after that no change.
For example this year Tenn,FLA & Miss St lost their coaches. Alabama get the right the to pick off the best players off those teams. That seems CRAZY.

Yeah that would be down-side. Imagine if Carey were to leave and Sutton and Pugh etc... were allowed to leave. There would be a hugh gap that the team wouldn't be able to fix for a year, if it happened in early January after first signing period.

when does recruitment stop? Right now you have schools recruiting graduated athletes eg Maric recruited by DePaul.
What about Group of 5 players who were also recruited by Power 5 teams?
Seems that this is another Power 5 strategy to cripple Group of 5 teams

It does make sense, but it is likely to lead to interpretation/gray area. For example, consider a scenario where a HC stays but makes an OC change. The new OC brings in a completely different scheme. What if the fired OC recruited a dual threat, running QB to fit the scheme, and now the new coach implements a pro style, pass first offense (no longer fitting the skill sets of the QB), shouldn’t that QB have the freedom to leave given the spirit/intent of the rule change.

Right. So you go to a school for every reason other than the coach.
Blame the school for firing the coach, the coach leaving not the kid going there.
And I like your examples. ALL schools that pretty much have no problem recruiting. This hurts them, when THEY fire a coach. Worried about AL? Really? If they wanted to be their either the player would be or Saban would have taken them. If anything this helps an school like NIU when a coach leaves other schools. Coaches get fired every blue moon, but numerous schools fire coaches. If we fired a coach for performance guessing are players wouldn't be that good.
Make it so the kid sits out a year IF he follows the coach. Also have a dead period for hiring/firing. That's something that makes too much sense, big boys are afraid of. And while at it, why don't schools use their heads and establish big time buyouts if a coach leaves. But some school will always low ball a buyout just to lure a coach they know is just stopping over if he does well.
