How are they not in bigger trouble? So as it turns out abuse was reported as far back as 1997 but not only was the victim ignored and silenced but punished for reporting it. Victims were almost victimized on a systematic basis. The judge has allowed a 140 women and girls to speak against their abuser.

Replace the victims from boys to girls and it’s basically penn State all over. Shameful.

One HUGE difference - every Michigan State alum I know is disgusted by this and wants to see heads roll, with everyone associated removed from the University.

One other difference, the numbers at Michigan State are considerably larger than Penn State. This is just totally disgusting and it, like Penn State has gone on for years.

It doesn’t look like the president is willing to step down in this one.

Yeah, the BoT thing, making sure there was "unanimous support," but not having it, the having the Chair still bringing up there was at a time this unanimous vote...utterly tone deaf.

The one thing PSU did do right was its LoA's for the quartet. Even if you don't terminate, take a walk for a bit. But, because it's higher ed, the politics and optics pretty much squash logic and common sense. Too many unspoken or unwritten rules about the forced LoA gesture.

I'm not defending PSU here, nor am I bashing MSU with my argument below.

But nobody at PSU in November 2011 was mad about Spanier getting fired. Spanier was just some administrative dude who some PSU folk couldn't even pick out of a police lineup. They were only mad about JoePa.

If Izzo/Dantonio was involved ---- an actual recognizable face who Spartans are emotionally invested in ---- it's hardly unfathomable to imagine many MSU folk lining up in their defense.

LoAs always lead to termination. Either because you are at some level responsible or because they just got you out of the way and it would be awkward to bring you back. MSU is not there ... yet. Also anyone you give an LoA to will be presumed guilty by the public, their reputations destroyed. That is non-repairable.

The culture around big money, be it media, movies, business, or sports is to pay money to hush up scandal, keep it out of written reports. In this respect colleges like MSU and PSU (and Alabama and every other school for that matter in FBS) are no different than NBC, FOX, Disney, or Google or Apple (not that I am aware of anything in those companies - but it's big money culture) for that matter.

I hate witch hunts, even though they seem to be necessary for the public appetite for immediate blood. I'd rather let the investigation into who knew what when get a bit further and more solid before using the Axe. In two months the ones who should get the Axe will be much clearer, and I really don't see a need to rush that and take out one or two who really should not get tarred.

That is the problem with an LoA. If you are giving somebody one, you had better be darn sure they need to go and you will win a defamation lawsuit.

The NCAA investigators are in the State of Michigan and looking for heads to place on a pike......

Better watch out, CMU Track & Field.
