Marcus Davenport Top 15 pick in Draft?
Obviously, UTSA fans are following this closely as the CUSA Defensive Player of Year is assuredly going to be the highest ever draft pick in our young program's history.

A few months ago we started hearing late 1st round considerations from various sites, albeit less unknown. Now ESPN, CBS Sports, NFL Network and others have him charging up the rankings and many are calling him the best pass rusher in the draft. Both Mel Kiper (ESPN) and NFL Network have him going in the top 15/top 10.

Senior bowl is this weekend. Most of the naysayers on Davenport are in regards to him playing "lesser" talent in CUSA. A sack or two or a few TFLs will surely solidify Davenport as a CUSA first rounder in this years' draft.

Senior bowl week is a good time to make an impression. But the practices are more important than the game. Most of the scouts will leave Thursday-Friday.

Good point. A lot of the scouts are pretty high on him from what I have seen. You can't really coach speed and size which he has both going for him. It's just surreal hearing comparisons to Damarcus Ware, Kahil Mack and other NFL G5 studs that have gone before. Also hearing folks say he is best edge rusher in the draft or at a minimum #2

He'll go high if he's thought of as one of the best pass rushers in the draft. Those guys rarely hit free agency in the NFL. They typically get re-signed or franchised. The crop this year is thin. Demarcus Lawrence and Ziggy Ansah probably never hit the market. The best you may have is a Adrian Clayborn who turns 30 this year and got 6 of his 9 sacks in one game against the cowboys backup left tackle. If you want a pass rusher you have to draft him.

Good news UTSA - I enjoyed watching our DT Bulter go in the late 1st round a couple of seasons ago before 2 Alabama DT's sitting with Saban.

Davenport is a MAN. Reminds me of a mix between V. Curry from MU/Philly Eagles and D. Ware as mentioned. Hope he goes early, just not too early to a crap team like the Clowns of Cleve-land. Helluva' talent.

Yea excited about the visibility that both UTSA and CUSA will get. Would be even better if he gets an invite to the draft and could walk the stage.

He'll probably have that opportunity. They invite pretty much everyone who has a chance to go in the 1st these days. Butler was there.

RE: Marcus Davenport Top 15 pick in Draft?
Update: He had a so-so day yesterday. Apparently, interviews were very strong. Davenport is a hard worker (took 18 hrs his senior year) and quite intelligent. Apparently teams were stealing him away at practice to talk to him.

From a practice standpoint, he struggled a bit, especially vs Alex Cappa in the one on ones. He did have a nice hit on a QB and some hurries.

Really a lot of the criticism about him is regarding his pad level. Davenport wasn't a traditional 3 point stance DE so he needs to adapt to that in the NFL. Other than that, scouts seem to be impressed with his speed, awareness and technical skill.

He did look good in the scrimmage part, but not on the one on one against Cappa.

Yes there is some conflicting talk. Todd McShay called him the best player at the senior bowl today on Mike and Mike.

Yeah, I think he played well at the Senior Bowl. Will have to see how he does at the combine.

According to PFF Draft he had 5 pressures on 25 attempts
1 sack
1 FR for a TD
and partially tipped a ball that ended up being intercepted.

I think he was originally credited for that tipped ball by the announcer, but the replay showed it was one of the defensive tackles. There was also a play though where he just absolutely leveled a runningback, in the second series of the game I believe.

Listening to some sports talk out of New Orleans they referred to Davenport as a “FCS player from UT San Antonio.”
