1/23 Games
2 games tonight with their potential RPI impacts:
Creighton @ St John's
Cre current 35- win 32 loss 42
SJ current 80- win 71 loss 85
Providence @ Nova
PC current 36- win 23 loss 36
Nova current 2- win 2 loss 6

The Creighton/St John's game is really interesting. For the tiers in RPI- it'd be better for the league if St John's actually won this one- make road games with St John's tier 1 games. But it's a HUGE game IMO for Creighton.

Yea, this year collapsed fast for St John's. They went from possible tourney team to potentially having Mullin being removed in a little over a month.

yeah if you had told me a month ago they'd need to be going 7-3 last 10 games to just have a chance at the NIT- I'd have said you were insane.

St. John's was going to be heavily reliant on their backcourt of Ponds & Lovett this year. With Lovett out since November, the team is having a tough year.
They also lost some of their depth when 4 star freshman Sydney Wilson immediately transferred to UConn.

yeah but even vs Arizona St they seemed like they were going to be at least competitive and win some games. But 9 straight losses? Just amazing.

RE: 1/23 Games
I wonder if Mullin considers leaving after this year. He doesn't need the money, nor would he be short on job opportunities in the NBA if he were to leave his alma mater. I think he is still growing and learning as a head coach, but St. Johns - even in the Lavin years - just cannot seem to get the pieces together to create a sustained run. Players either get hurt or transfer out. It's not like they aren't recruiting well (under either Mullin or Lavin). There's always just one piece or component missing it appears.

I agree. Just something seems really off there right now. Can't put the finger on it, but they're kind of the opposite of Butler- Butler always gets more out of what they have, while St John's always gets less out of what they have.

RE: 1/23 Games
It would be nice to have one New York area team playing at a high level. Seton Hall loses a lot at the end of this year with the graduation of Delgado, Carrington and Rodriguez.
St. John's improved under Mullin from year 1 to year 2. I had them being a mid tier Big East team this year (Bubble/NIT). With the injuries/transfers, they are now a bottom tier Big East team. If they don't show solid improvement next year, I'm sure the fanbase will start to grow uneasy with Mullin at the helm.

I think it's probably already uneasy. If it wasn't Saint Mullin, there would be pitch forks right now I think!

Yes. Combined with the question--if Saint Mullin can't right the ship, who or what can? Is our ceiling now to be a launching pad for young coaches who leave for a stronger program, or a nondescript phase in the career of mediocre-to-good coaches like Lavin?

So Mullin is going to have every chance imaginable.

That's an interesting point, and probably extremely valid.

I think a question for me(and was posted on the other site)- does Mullin really like coaching? At times, he's looked absolutely miserable. You just wonder if he thinks he can't do it and moves on. At which point, what you posted is probably right.

On the other other hand, how does Mullin's resume look if he walks away from St. Johns? Looked at with a critical eye, he's got some scouting chops, but he doesn't exactly have a gold-plated resume as an executive--his name is on the Stephon Curry draft pick, but who knows if it was really him or Larry Riley. The rest of his tenure in Golden STate didn't get him a new GM contract in Golden STate, he didn't move any mountains as an adviser in Sacramento.

I mean, he'll have an office to go to somewhere, in Bristol or at some NBA franchise. But if he can't be a successful CEO of St. John's Big East basketball, he's not going to go anywhere else and be The Man.

RE: 1/23 Games
The thing is, if Mullin doesn't think he can do it, does he think staying longer will further tarnish his legacy? Does he think if he leaves now, he gets at least somewhat of a pass with the dumpster fire that Lavin left him?

I do think it's absolutely comical folks who really think Billy Donovan would come coach St John's. If Donovan comes back to college, it's going to be for a top 10 job. It's not going to be for a dumpster fire. Like it or not, St John's is a dumpster fire.
