Frosh not playing? Coach answers
FWIW - Here are Coach JJ's thoughts on our Frosh. May not like his thoughts but at least we now have them and don't have to keep guessing.

RE: Frosh not playing? Coach answers
I was kinda hoping he'd just admit that he was just being stubborn and wasn't playing them, despite thinking they could help us, simply because he doesn't like freshmen, or offense, or whatever.

04-bow Well, we all know that is what is really true even if it is not what he said publicly for the article. 04-cheers

Absurd. Outdated. Short sighted.

It's clearly because he's trying not to score.

RE: Frosh not playing? Coach answers
Can I ask a related, and maybe even relevant, question? We're 14-4, 5-1, as is. Would we feel better or worse about where we were if Jones had played the young guys more, developing them for the future, and we were 11-7, 4-2?

Rightly or wrongly, Jones seems to believe that for the right now, Godwin and Hueitt aren't better than the other options he has. Assuming he's right about that, do you still agree with the approach, or would you be ok with a couple more losses knowing we are developing the young guys for future situations in which they might be able to help us?

This isn't a rebuilding year. The goal isn't to develop the young guys, it's to do whatever he needs to do to win. If he believes not playing Heuitt/Godwin right now while they are still figuring out the playbook/defense/rotations, I don't have an issue with it. If we were rebuilding, obviously the answer is for them to play.

I wouldn't feel a lot different. Despite our record, which likely would not be much different playing the younger guys, because we have not really beaten anyone that is good anyway. I don't think we are good enough to win in Frisco, and make the NCAA tournament. If the young guys had been incorporated earlier, were getting better, and setting us up to be much better down the stretch, I might even feel better than I do right now, even if the record was a little worse.

To me, the reality is that we are not good enough as we currently exist to win this league, and for that reason, a really good record doesn't mean much.

I just think this style of play is going to hurt in March. We need to be able to have depth and these guys aren't getting minutes. 14-4 is no different than 11-7 in CUSA. We need to win the tournament to dance, and I don't think we can do that with 6.5 players.

Yeah. The good record is job security.

We have a 7 man rotation that is very common in college basketball. People are making way too much about this. I would like Caver to sit a couple extra minuters per game though. There are plenty of teams that have gone through 4 day conference tournaments with a 7 man rotation at a much higher pace than we play at.

And if the light clicks on for MH/MG in the next few weeks, maybe they steal some minutes.

I'd feel better if we had beaten VCU, W&M and WKU no matter who played. If we had beaten them and the freshman each scored 10 even better.

You know the answer to that question. People would have out the pitchforks and your geniuses here would be speculating on who we should hire next and what AD should do it. To me, it's the coach's job on the line. If what he espouses doesn't work, he's out, simple as that. I can assure you he wants these kids to get it and get it quick. A few games ago, someone brought up that Brandan had a foul-plagued game. Jones immediately defended him saying that most of his fouls were covering for lapses by others, that he was playing hard and that sometimes you do the right thing with the wrong result.

In big games we barely have a 6.5 man rotation... and we visibly run out of gas every time. Say what you want, but the reality does not jive with your narrative.

Anectdotal evidence at best. Additionally, how many minutes does a player have to play to "be in the rotation?"

The funny thing is Monarch's favorite Dukies won the ACC tourney with a "6.5" man rotation over the course of 4 days.

Well if he wins 23 games because he was just trying to milk out the best win total possible and fails to make the tournament again, and fails to make the team more ready to make the tournament next year in the process, I would prefer the record just suck so there isn't a reason for folks like you to justify keeping him and his best friend, mediocrity, around for another half decade without getting us to the tournament.
