How many years would he have as eligible? He has played in 2, but was ineligible for one. Verbal commits has him listed as a JR.

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
Van Vliet seems like a solid add. Didn't do great against Big 10 opponents (Though he did put up 14 against Northwestern), he had good games against mid/low major opponents (18 points 8 rebounds 2 blocks against South Carolina State, 13 points 3 rebounds and a block against Yale). Also shot 52% from 3 point range, though he only had 23 attempts.

Aleks Abrams is a grad transfer with a year if eligibility left.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/pla...ams-1.html

Found the following on fansmanship
(http://www.fansmanship.com/cal-poly-bask...ks-abrams/)

“After redshirting his first year on campus, Abrams showed he wasn’t afraid to push in the post defensively. While it wasn’t for lack of effort, Abrams, who is listed at 6’8″, wasn’t the longest big man in the world. His offensive game only developed incrementally over the past two seasons, and his effectiveness was matchup-dependent. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench in an overtime loss at home against UC Davis this past season and a four point, 18 rebound effort in Cal Poly’s final win of the season, a 90-86 double overtime victory over CSUN.
In a conference that has gotten bigger across the board, Abrams was a somewhat undersized center.
Abrams never put up huge numbers consistently, but he had some sneaky-good defensive and rebounding games in his career and hustled and got his work done in class over four seasons at Cal Poly.”

And Austin got the quick follow-back. Abrams is also connected with coaches at Miami (OH), Maine, Radford, Milwaukee, Seattle, La Salle, and Charlotte.

I was so busy getting this post together that I missed the Van Vliet news! With Van Vliet in the fold but sitting next year the Tribe now pivots to an immediately eligible big man.

Great news. Welcome to the Tribe Family, Andy!!

Since he had to sit out his freshman year due to an NCAA ruling, the question will be does he get that extra second year eligibility back, and whether he may still graduate this spring/summer from Wisconsin for immediate eligibility???

Regarding grad transfer Aleks Abrams, he is eligible to apply for a medical redshirt waiver to get a second year of eligibility. Despite only averaging 13 mins/game this year, he still tied for second leading rebounder on Cal Poly at 4.3. He is strictly a paint workhorse, no 3pt range. Love to see us add him, also, and get two years of eligibility. Both of Abrams parents were Kent State grads (who I believe has, also, been in contact) and his father is a NFL scout for the Cowboys.

In both cases, W&M would have to submit the waiver request.

Things looking up.

Unfortunately I have seen nothing indicating that Van Vliet is graduating this spring. Looking at Abrams at this juncture makes me think Van Vliet is not graduating.

Abrams redshirted his freshman year and then played three full seasons plus that partial season where he was injured. How does he possibly qualify for a second year of eligibilty?

Abrams has really good footwork downlow.

As a side thought about Van Vliet, I hope this will, also, open more future inroads to recruiting international players out of high school, that Davidson has previously done very well with.

About time we got some payback from Wisconsin in our recruiting efforts.

This suggests one year to sit and one to play:

Abrams only played two full seasons. He played in five games before season ending shoulder injury his redshirt freshman year, which meets the less than 30% of their games rule.

RE: 2018 CAA MBB Transfers
Apparently Andy was a starter entering the season. The only thing holding him back was struggling with the physicality of the big 10. Our whole team struggled with big 10 physicality, so he should fit right in.

He is a legit 7 footer and supposedly an excellent 3pt shooter. Shot close to 50% last season on limited attempts.

I believe you are correct unless he can somehow appeal the one year he already sat out and get credit for that. Just a theory

Hopefully it works out that way.

He also needs to get the approval of the “we can’t win because we suck at defense because we don’t practice defense” committee.

I understand they have obtained a veto over any program moves until further notice. Their approval may be tougher to get than the NCAA’s.

(Sorry for the snark. Punchy from baby-sitting the granddaughter.)

He is a great fit, and the prospect of Nate and him giving us five deadly 3 pt shooters on the court at all times is heady territory for any college team, no matter what level. I, also, think the matchup option of he and Nate being on the floor together is a monster.

Many Wisconsin fans during the season thought their coach was too rigid about physicality/defense and needed to be more adaptive regarding what Van Vliet brought to the table with his offense. Legit 7 footer.

I truly hope Nate is still around for his senior year, and doesn't come out to the draft early, because barring injury we will be hands down a scary team with the chance at a historic season. Yes, I am gulping the koolaid!!!

Is he eligible to work with the team? If so, what a great practice buddy for Nate.

So, we now have future help inside and someone to challenge nate in practice. Now sights need to set 100% on an immediately eligible high school kid or graduate transfer. Lack of in game depth could sink this team if not addressed. I really like that Abrams kid that was mentioned. Big, physical presence with light feet and good hands.

Yes, and I hope Cole is being kept around as a possible grad assistant which means he could bang in practice, also.

Abrams is graduating from Cal Poly with honors, so, no academic hurdle.

I'm wondering if the interest was pre Van Vliet, or the interest is independent.

I like that there seems to be mutual interest.
